The Redhawks earned a weekend sweep with a 3-1 victory over Houston Baptist on Friday, Oct. 31 and a 3-0 shutout, the team’s eighth of the season, versus Incarnate Word on Sunday, Nov. 2. The pair of wins moved the Redhawks into a tie for second in the WAC standings with Incarnate Word.
Haddadi scored two goals over the weekend, marking four goals in the last four matches, also adding an assist. On Friday, he scored the first goal of the game in the sixth minute and, on Sunday, he assisted the game-winner, also adding the second goal of the game.
“Hamza has done a terrific job of simplifying his game,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “He’s a very good finisher and it’s great to see him getting goals, especially towards the end of the regular season as we head into the WAC tournament. I’m proud of Hamza’s efforts and there are a lot of guys getting the ball to him in important spots, so it’s a great team effort as well.”
Haworth allowed just one goal in the pair of matches, making six saves in each victory and recording his eighth shutout of the season vs. Incarnate Word. Sunday’s shutout was just the second league loss for the Cardinals this season.
“That’s Shane’s eighth shutout in 16 games and he’s done a fantastic job making big saves to keep games close,” Fewing said. “He made a big save just before the half against Incarnate Word to preserve the shutout. This is his first year as a full-time starter and he’s getting better and more comfortable in his box with what balls he can get to. I give Jeff Koch, our goalkeeper coach, a lot of credit as he’s done a great job with our goalies over the years. I’m very happy for Shane and it’s exciting to see him get this kind of recognition.”
The Redhawks (10-5-1, 5-2-1 WAC) close the regular season at San Jose State on Friday, Nov. 7 at 2:30 p.m. and Bakersfield on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. They will return home next week to host the WAC tournament, welcoming the top six teams to Championship Field on Nov. 13, 14, and 16, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
