Seattle U Travels to Face Kansas City, Air Force Academy: After a key Western Athletic Conference victory in the double overtime thriller vs. Utah Valley at Championship Field on Oct. 18, Seattle University men’s soccer (7-4-1, 2-1-1 WAC) heads to Kansas City (Friday, Oct. 24) and Air Force (Sunday, Oct. 26) for a pair of WAC road matches. Scouting Kansas City (3-8-2, 1-3-1 WAC): Last weekend, Kansas City fell at Grand Canyon, 3-2, before stunning UNLV, 2-1, in Las Vegas and handing the Rebels their first WAC loss of 2014. Nick Cramer leads the squad offensively with three goals and six points while, in goal, Chris McGaughey has allowed 18 goals (1.34 GAA) and made 60 saves (.769 save %), playing all 13 complete games in goal. Last season, the Redhawks handed the ‘Roos a 4-3 loss on Senior Day in Kansas City (Nov. 3) as the Redhawks made a momentous comeback after trailing 3-1 at the half. Two of their three wins this season have come on their home pitch, earlier defeating SIU-Edwardsville and Central Arkansas by one goal margins apiece.
Scouting Air Force (6-3-4, 2-2-1 WAC): Sunday will be a key WAC matchup for the Redhawks as the Falcons sit just below in the conference rankings. Last weekend, Air Force fell to UNLV, 2-0, before playing Grand Canyon to a scoreless draw. Zach Hill leads the squad with four goals while Gus Jensen has a team-high nine points (three goals, three assists). Jake Schenk holds the starting spot in goal, starting 12 of 13, and allowing just eight goals (0.62 GAA) while making 64 saves (.889 save pct.). Generally playing a defensive style of play and drawing their opponents into the same, they or their opponent have only scored more than two goals in two of 13 matches this season. Schenk has earned two WAC Defensive Player of the Week nods this season, last on Sept. 22, after helping the Falcons remain unbeaten with a tie at UC Davis and a victory at Sacramento State. Last season, the Redhawks and Falcons ended their regular season meeting in a 1-1 draw on Oct. 25 at Championship Field before Seattle U defeated Air Force, 2-0, on Nov. 15 en route to their WAC Tournament title. This will be the first time Seattle U has returned to Colorado Springs since their 2013 title run, as Air Force hosted last season’s WAC men’s soccer tournament.
National Rankings: The Redhawks have been ranked in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25 twice this season, including No. 22 on Sept. 2 and No. 24 on Sept. 30. These are the program’s first two national rankings since reclassifying back to NCAA Division I.
Best of the West: In the Oct. 21 edition of the NSCAA/Continental Tire Men’s Soccer West Regional rankings, five of the top 10 teams are members of the Western Athletic Conference.
