Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) of Seattle University men’s soccer (7-4-1, 2-1-1 WAC) has been named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 13-18, 2014. This is Haworth’s third such career honor after being named twice earlier this season for the weeks of Aug. 25-31 and Sept. 22-28.

“We have six shutouts in 12 games and last year, in 24 games, we had a total of five, so our defense is doing very well and Shane is coming up with some big saves,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “You want your goalkeeper to make one or two goal-saving saves a game and he certainly did that versus Utah Valley, not only in 90 minutes but in 104 minutes. He’s getting better and better, as it’s his first year as a full-time starter, and he’s gaining more confidence.”

Haworth made a season-high nine saves in the thrilling 1-0 double overtime victory on Oct. 18 vs. Utah Valley. The win marked his sixth shutout of the season in 12 total games.

Incarnate Word’s Ben Conway was named Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a goal in each of the Cardinals’ two road wins over the weekend.

This weekend, the Redhawks head to Kansas City for a WAC Digital Network match on Friday, Oct. 24 at 5 pm PT and Air Force on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 12 noon. They return home next weekend to honor this year’s senior class.

Seattle U will host both the Women’s (Nov. 6-7, 9) and Men’s (Nov. 13-14, 16) WAC Soccer Tournament on back-to-back weekends next month. All-session passes are on sale now on Ticketmaster and can also be purchased by calling the Redhawk Ticket office at (206) 398-GOSU(4678).
