The Western Athletic Conference has announced their preseason media and coaches’ polls as well as Preseason All-Conference teams and Seattle University was chosen to finish second by the media and third by the league head coaches.

In the media poll, the Redhawks, sitting in second with 67 points, also received one first place vote. In the coaches’ poll, they received 33 points, finishing third.

Sophomore Wilma Afunugo (Plano, Texas), who led the league in field-goal percentage during her freshman campaign in 2013-14, was also named Preseason Second Team All-WAC by the WAC women’s basketball media.

In both polls, Bakersfield was the nearly unanimous pick to finish first while in the media poll, the Redhawks finished second, and UTPA and New Mexico State were picked to finish tied for third. Rounding out the poll, Grand Canyon was picked fifth, Kansas City sixth, Utah Valley seventh, and Chicago State eighth.

In the coaches poll, UTPA was picked second while Seattle U rounded out the top three. Utah Valley was picked fourth, receiving one first place vote, while New Mexico State (fifth), Grand Canyon (sixth), Kansas City (seventh), and Chicago State (eighth) rounded out the list.

The Redhawks will play a record 20 games on their home court in 2014-15, with the regular season home opener vs. Portland State on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m. Of note, SU hosts Washington on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at KeyArena in the inaugural Women in Leadership night with several special guests and activities planned for the evening.
