Freshman Joe Harvie (Orting, Wash.) finished the 54-hole OGIO Utah Invitational tied for the individual lead, and other members of the Seattle University men’s golf team saved their best for the final round, helping the Redhawks to a second-place finish Tuesday at The Jeremy Golf and Country Club.

Harvie shot his third consecutive 70 (-1), starting the day with birdies on the third and fifth holes. A bogey on the sixth hole and a double bogey on the ninth hole set him back, but he recovered right away with consecutive birdies on the 10th and 11th holes. After birding the 16th hole, Harvie bogeyed the 18th hole, and Southern Utah’s Nic Booth birdied the ninth hole, his final hole of regulation, to pull into a tie with Harvie at three-under-par 210.

The two competitors matched each other stroke-for-stroke through the first four holes of the tiebreaker before returning to the par-four 18th hole. Booth prevailed with a par on the fifth playoff hole to earn medalist honors, while Harvie still earned the best finish of any Seattle U golfer so far this season, thanks in part to 12 birdies during the tournament.

Two other Seattle U golfers also shot one-under-par 70 in Tuesday’s final round. Kyle Cornett (Mill Creek, Wash.) played a steady round with three birdies, two bogeys, and 13 pars to move up into a tie for 11th place with a three-round total of 215 (+2). Shane Wathanasaynee (Los Alamitos, Calif.) also collected three birdies and just two bogeys during his final round, completing the tournament in a tie for 18th place at 217 (+4).

Patrick Sato (Bellevue, Wash.) hit a rough stretch starting on the eighth hole, making five bogeys in the span of eight holes, as he shot 74 (+3) to finish in a tie for 21st place at 218 (+5). Luckily, that was the score to be dropped for the team in the third round, as Ahren Young (Renton, Wash.) converted 15 pars for a final round 72 (+1) and a 54-hole total of 222 (+9), good enough for a tie for 41st place. Ross Kukula (Ocean Park, Wash.) shot 73 (+2) Tuesday to finish in a tie for 48th place at 224 (+11).

Seattle U combined to shoot even-par 355 in the third round, maintaining its second-place position in the team standings with a final score of 1076 (+11), eight strokes ahead of third-place Pacific. Santa Clara broke away late in the round, shooting 348 (-7) for an 11-stroke victory with a final total of even-par 1065.

The Seattle University men’s golf team enjoys a week off before heading across the country to Beallsville, Md., to participate in the Georgetown Intercollegiate Oct. 20-21 at The Members Club at Four Streams.
