After helping the Seattle University volleyball team to league victories over Texas-Pan American and New Mexico State last weekend, sophomore setter Kerry Lane (Tucson, Ariz.) has been named the Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, announced Monday morning by the conference office.
Thursday evening, Lane led Seattle U’s offense to a .293 hitting percentage, the second-highest for the Redhawks this season, with 36 assists and four kills in six attempts, plus she earned two service aces, four digs, and three block assists. She assisted on Seattle U’s key kills late in the second set that prevented Texas-Pan American from winning the set, and she helped the Redhawks pull out to a significant lead in the third set as they completed the sweep of the Broncs.
Saturday, Lane was a major factor in Seattle U snapping New Mexico State’s WAC winning streak that spanned almost an entire calendar year, collecting 41 assists, two kills, one service ace, five digs, and a career-high seven total blocks. She spread the offense around successfully, as three different Redhawks finished with at least 13 kills in the match, plus she was part of over half of the team’s total blocks as Seattle U earned the 3-1 victory over the Aggies.
For the season, Lane is second in the league in assists per set in all matches (9.50 assists/set), leading the WAC in assists per set in conference contests with 11.08 assists per set. In just one and a half years, Lane has moved into fourth place on Seattle U’s all-time list for assists with 1,608 after collecting 1,076 assists last season, fifth-most in a single season in Redhawk history.
Seattle University (6-10, 2-1 WAC) heads to the Midwest next weekend, facing Chicago State Thursday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. local time (5 p.m. Pacific time) before taking on UMKC in Kansas City, Mo., Saturday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. Central time (11 a.m. Pacific time). The Redhawks return home the following weekend for three straight home matches, closing out the first half of the WAC season against Bakersfield (Oct. 16) and Grand Canyon (Oct. 18) before opening the second half of the conference schedule against Utah Valley (Oct. 25).
