No. 24 Seattle U Opens Conference Play at Utah Valley: After a pair of wins last weekend to close out their non-conference schedule and with a move back into the national rankings this week, No. 24 Seattle U men’s soccer heads to Orem, Utah to face Utah Valley in their Western Athletic Conference opener on Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT. As SU went 7-0-3 in league play in 2013 en route to the WAC regular season and tournament titles, the Redhawks look to defend their undefeated all-time WAC record. Next weekend, the Redhawks will host UNLV (Oct. 10 at 5 p.m.) and Grand Canyon (Oct. 12 at 1:30 p.m.) in a pair of doubleheaders with the women’s team. National Rankings: The Redhawks move back into the national rankings after recording shutouts versus both No. 24 Oregon State and Gonzaga at home last weekend. This is the team’s second national ranking since returning to Division I play, as they were ranked No. 22 in the Sept. 2 version of the NSCAA/Continental Tire national poll.
Best of the West: In the Sept. 30 edition of the NSCAA/Continental Tire Men’s Soccer West Regional rankings, five of the top 10 teams are members of the Western Athletic Conference. Seattle U has earned the top spot while Air Force (3rd), Bakersfield (4th), UNLV (6th), and Utah Valley (8th) are also ranked regionally.
Scouting Utah Valley (4-3-0): The Wolverines have recorded an impressive 4-3-0 non-conference schedule in their first season as a men’s soccer program, facing two ranked opponents and earning their first win against a ranked opponent on Sept. 19 vs. No. 21 Denver, 2-1. Of note, UVU defeated UMass, 5-1, in their first ever match and, most recently, took No. 4 UC Irvine to double OT before falling, 2-1, on Sept. 28. Matt Gay leads the team with five goals while Collin Partee has been the primary keeper, recording 28 saves.
