Seattle University men’s soccer’s Shane Haworth (Puyallup, Wash.) has received the first Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor of 2014. This is also Haworth’s first career nod.
"Shane was terrific this weekend, so this is fantastic," said head coach Pete Fewing. "Last year he did not play a single minute so he was just exceptional this weekend. He kept us in the game against College of Charleston, getting the shutout. This is well-deserved and he's just going to get better."
On opening weekend, the junior goalkeeper earned two wins at the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Soccer Classic in Charleston, S.C. over Furman and College of Charleston. In the 2-1 win over Furman, Haworth made seven saves, and recorded a shutout and six more saves in the 2-0 win over CofC. He was named to the All-Tournament team at the conclusion of weekend competition.
Haworth earned the starting spot in 2014 after having not competed in regular season action since the 2012 season.
