For the second time in three years, at least one golfer with Seattle University ties has qualified for the United States Women’s Amateur Championships, as Dorsey Addicks (Big Sky, Mont.) finished in a tie for second place in a qualifier held on the Witch Hollow course of Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.
With just five spots up for grabs among the 46 players entered, Addicks started strong with a birdie on the first hole. After bogeys on the third and seventh holes, Addicks recovered with birdies on the eighth and 10th holes to move back to one-under-par.
A bogey on the 11th hole, a double-bogey on the 13th hole, and a bogey on the 16th hole dropped Addicks to three-over-par, but once again she steadied herself, birding the 18th hole to finish at two-over-par 74, good enough for a three-way tie for second and a spot in the national amateur tournament. Without the birdie on the final hole, Addicks would have been forced to participate in a four-way playoff for two spots.
It has been a busy summer for Addicks, starting with a second-place finish at the 78th annual Earl Hunt Memorial Fourth of July Tournament at Whitefish Lake Golf Club in Whitefish, Mont. Last week, she advanced to the quarterfinals of the match play portion of the Pacific Northwest Women’s Amateur Championship at Lewiston Golf and Country Club in Lewiston, Idaho, after finishing in a tie for 11th place in the two-round stroke play qualifier.
Several of Addicks’s Redhawk teammates also made the attempt to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championships. Amanda Beyke (Federal Way, Wash.) finished in a tie for eighth place after shooting 77 (+5), while Alexus Song (Auburn, Wash.) shot 81 (+9) and Jamie Huo (Kent, Wash.) finished at 84 (+12).
The 2014 United States Women’s Amateur Championships will take place at the Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, N.Y., Aug. 4-10. The participants will play 36 holes of stroke play Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 4-5, with the top 64 moving on to match play starting Wednesday, Aug. 6.
