The Seattle University softball team lost to ninth-ranked Washington, 11-0, Tuesday night at Logan Field at Seattle University Park.
Hooch Fagaly led off the second inning with a solo home run to left-center field, and then the Huskies loaded the bases when Ali Aguilar drew a walk, Whitney Jones was hit by a pitch, and Dani Braun sent a single into left field. Kelli Suguro drove in Aguilar with a sacrifice fly to left field, and the other two runners advanced when the throw into the infield got away from the Redhawk defense.
Victoria Hayward drove in both runners with a double to left-center field, stole third base, and scored on an RBI groundout hit by Jennie McNeill. The next two Husky batters would reach base on Seattle U errors, and, after a wild pitch advanced them to second and third, Fagaly would bring them both home with a single up the middle.
Seattle U put two runners on base in each of their next two at-bats, but could not bring anybody home. Washington (22-10) extended its lead in the fourth inning, starting with back-to-back singles by Kaitlin Inglesby and Marki Creger-Zier. Another Redhawk error allowed Inglesby to come around and score, and then Creger-Zier would come home on a single to left field by Braun.
Suguro singled to right field to load the bases, and Hayward followed with a two-run single to left field, driving in Aguilar and Braun. The combination of Bryana Walker and Inglesby took care of the Redhawk offense in the next two innings, ending the contest after the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.
“We are not taking care of the defensive plays that we can, and we are putting too much pressure on our pitchers to be perfect,” Seattle U head coach Dan Powers said. “The team battled throughout the night, and the at-bats were better than they were last weekend, so I hope we can carry that into this weekend.”
Richelle Ashburn (Post Falls, Idaho) took the loss for the Redhawks, allowing five hits, a walk, and seven runs, four of them earned, in 1 2/3 innings of work. Freshmen Alyssa Reuble (Lynnwood, Wash.) and Lindsay Davis (Palo Cedro, Calif.) also saw action in the circle for Seattle U. No Redhawk player earned more than one hit in the game, as Seattle U finished with four hits against the Huskies.
