“I feel very fortunate to have someone of Scott’s caliber on our staff,” said Woodward. “He is an extremely experienced, knowledgeable person who has worked with many talented athletes and has shown his ability to coach and succeed at high levels. Besides being a terrific coach, he is just an overall tremendous person of high character. In his short time here, he has already made some significant contributions that we as a program will benefit from, and I really look forward to working with him.”
Newman has served as a coach at all levels of the game for over 25 years, most recently as the head coach and Director of Coaching for the Northwest Nationals. At the club level, he has also coached for the Maple Valley Marauders, Eastside FC, FC Alliance, Washington Soccer Club, Missoula Strikers, FC Portland, and Salem United Soccer Club.
At the collegiate level, he most recently served as an assistant coach at the University of Washington in place of associate head coach Amy Griffin while she worked with the US U20 Women’s World Cup Championship Team. He also previously worked as an assistant coach at University of Montana (2001) and at Willamette University in Salem, Ore. (1997-99).
Newman has also served as a Regional Staff Coach, Regional GK Staff Coach, and Regional Head GK Coach with Region IV ODP, also as a State ODP Coach. At the state level, he helped lead the team to a National Championship as the Washington ODP Head Age Group Coach, also serving as the Oregon ODP Head Age Group Coach, Montana ODP Head Age Group Coach, and Washington ODP Girls Head Coach (head coach of entire girls ODP program in Washington State).
“I am excited to coach at Seattle University,” said Newman. “I have coached several players in the past that attended Seattle U and they speak so highly of the atmosphere surrounding the women’s soccer team and the university in general. I have known Coach Woodward and Coach Schreiner for a long time and really respect the way they coach. In the short time I have been around the program I am impressed with how much the program feels like a family. This family atmosphere is what really attracted me to coach at Seattle University.”
Newman replaces Katie Hultin, who was announced as an assistant coach at the University of Illinois in January.
“We are extraordinary grateful for Katie’s five years of volunteer service to our program,” adds Woodward. “We would not be where we are today without her hard work.”
The Redhawks will look to defend their Western Athletic Conference title in 2014 in their third season in the league.
