Seattle U to Close 2013-14 Regular Season at Home: Seattle University women’s basketball (13-14, 8-6 WAC) finishes out the 2013-14 regular season on their home floor as they host Kansas City on Mar. 6 and Chicago State on Mar. 8. This year’s senior class will be recognized prior to Saturday’s game as Kacie Sowell, Ashley Ward, and Sylvia Shephard are honored for their accomplishments and contributions to the SU women’s basketball program. Scouting UMKC (10-17, 6-8 WAC): The ‘Roos currently hold their opponents to the lowest three-point field-goal percentage (26.9%) in the league and also lead the WAC in free-throw percentage (77.7%). On a national scale, UMKC’s free-throw percentage ranks ninth in the NCAA. Individually, Eilise O’Connor leads the WAC in scoring (21.5 ppg) and Kim Nezianya tops the league in rebounding (11.0 rpg). O’Connor was recently named a CoSIDA Academic All-American and joined SU’s Kacie Sowell on the Allstate WBCA Good Works Team this year. In the teams’ first meeting earlier this season, UMKC took the victory, 77-65 in Kansas City. They currently sit in seventh place in the WAC with one weekend to go in regular season play.
Scouting Chicago State (3-24, 0-14 WAC): The Cougars are set to make their furthest trip west to close out the regular season, facing Idaho in Moscow on Thursday before closing out the season in Seattle on Mar. 8. Still looking for their first WAC win, CSU fell, 69-38, most recently vs. Grand Canyon in their home finale on Mar. 1. Tierra Williams and Paris Williams lead the Cougars in scoring, averaging 13.1 and 10.9 ppg, respectively, while Layne Murphy is grabbing a team high 7.0 rpg. Earlier this season, the Redhawks opened WAC play in Chicago, coming away with a 85-58 win on Jan. 2. As has already been statistically decided going into this weekend, the Cougars will be the No. 8 seed in next week’s Western Athletic Conference tournament.
