The Seattle University men’s swim team concluded its regular season with a dual meet loss to the BYU Cougars, 155-49, Saturday afternoon at the Connolly Center Pool.
Mark Langston (Elk Grove, Calif.) finished second in the 1000 freestyle with a personal season-best time of 10:05.67, while Bart Wanot (Federal Way, Wash.) was able to touch the wall second in the 50 freestyle in 21.43 seconds. Alec Barnard (Everett, Wash.) finished second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:57.76.
The other second-place finish for the Redhawks came in the 400 freestyle relay, as Tomas Mendez-Beck (Hillsboro, Ore.), Nicolas Morrell (Bend, Ore.), Douglas Pizac (Salt Lake City, Utah), and Tanner Schelling (Boise, Idaho) combined for a time of 3:09.02. Schelling’s 100 freestyle split of 46.76 seconds was fastest among the anchor legs and third-fastest among all 16 competitors in the final event of the meet.
Barnard also posted a personal season-best time in the 50 freestyle in 22.51 seconds, as did Mendez-Beck in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:45.14. Morrell finished third in the 200 backstroke with a personal season-best mark of 1:53.18, while Connor Webb (Hood River, Ore.) and Damon Perry (Sammamish, Wash.) both earned personal-best marks for the year in the 200 individual medley, with Webb posting a time of 2:00.33, followed by Perry at 2:02.31.
BYU (2-3) won every event during the meet, setting pool records along the way in the 400 medley relay (3:21.52) and in the 500 freestyle (4:35.67). Rainer Ng led off the medley relay with a 49.55-second 100 backstroke split before breaking the pool record in the 500 freestyle. Jake Taylor anchored the medley relay with a 100 freestyle split of 45.59 seconds before winning both the 200 individual medley (1:52.95) and the 200 backstroke (1:51.77).
Seattle University (2-7) begins preparations for the 2014 Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, taking place at the Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas, Feb. 26 through March 1.
