Scouting Grand Canyon (13-4, 2-2 WAC as of 1/22): Grand Canyon emerged from non-conference play with a 11-2 record, topping teams like Nevada and Hawai’i and narrowly losing to Mississippi State and UCLA. In their first season in the WAC, they lost their first two games at UTPA and New Mexico State before winning their most recent two at home vs. Bakersfield (Jan. 9) and Utah Valley (Jan. 11). On the season, they are outscoring their opponents, 70.9-58.9 ppg and are slightly outrebounding those faced, 38.4-37.0 rpg. Kaitlyn Petersen leads Grand Canyon in scoring, averaging 14.4 ppg while Judy Jones grabs a team-high 8.5 rpg. GCU is in their first year of NCAA Division I reclassification and, thus, is not eligible for postseason competition. The Lopes will face WAC leader Idaho on Feb. 23 before coming to Seattle for the game on Feb. 25.

Redhawks to Host Annual Play 4Kay Game on February 1: The team will host Idaho on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m. in their annual Play 4Kay game to benefit and raise money for the fight against women’s cancers. If the team’s $2,014 goal is met by the end of the game, head coach Joan Bonvicini has agreed to be pied in the face at center court following the game. The quickest way to contribute to the cause is by making an online donation at www.play4kay.org/suwbb. There will also be several ways to contribute at the game on February 1.

Playing the Field: Seattle U’s field-goal percentages at Chicago State on Jan. 2 (65.3%) and vs. UTPA on Jan. 11 (63.3%) were the highest field-goal percentages posted as a team since Seattle U reclassified back to Division I starting in the 2008-09 season.

Stoffel Named GoSeattleU.com Featured Student-Athlete of the Week: After helping lead Seattle U to a 2-0 record in Western Athletic Conference competition versus New Mexico State and University of Texas-Pan American, Kristin Stoffel was named Featured Student-Athlete of the Week on GoSeattleU.com for the week of Jan. 6-12. Over the weekend, Stoffel scored seven points, going 3-for-3 from the field, and grabbed an equal number of rebounds, also recording an assist and a steal versus New Mexico State on Jan. 9.
