Redhawks to Face WAC Newcomers on the Road: Seattle University women’s basketball (8-9, 3-1 WAC) went 2-0 last weekend defeating New Mexico State, 61-51, in their WAC home opener on Jan. 9 before topping UTPA, 84-62, on Jan. 11. The Redhawks are now 4-0 vs. NMSU over the last two seasons as conference foes while the meeting with the Broncs was the first ever meeting between the two teams. This week, Seattle U travels to face WAC newcomers Bakersfield (7-7, 1-1 WAC) and Utah Valley (3-12, 0-2 WAC as of Jan. 14) on Jan. 16 and 18. From the Field: Seattle U’s field-goal percentages at Chicago State on Jan. 2 (65.3%) and vs. UTPA on Jan. 11 (63.3%) were the highest field-goal percentages posted as a team since Seattle U reclassified back to Division I starting in the 2008-09 season.

Scouting Bakersfield (7-7, 1-1 WAC): Bakersfield finished their non-conference season with a 6-6 record, earning four of their six wins at home, while playing a tough preseason schedule, including versus three Pac-12 schools (Oregon, Oregon State, and California). They opened up the conference season with a narrow win at Utah Valley, 61-59, on Jan. 4 before falling at Grand Canyon, 78-64, most recently (Jan. 9). The Roadrunners return home for the first time since Dec. 30 to host SU in their WAC home opener this week. Tyonna Outland leads the team in scoring, averaging 19.1 ppg while Batabe Zempare averages a team-high 12.0 rpg, ranking ninth in the nation.
Scouting Utah Valley (3-12, 0-2 WAC as of Jan. 14): The Wolverines open their inaugural Western Athletic Conference schedule with three of their first four at home. In their WAC home opener, they fell to Bakersfield, 61-59, in a close contest on Jan. 4, also falling at Grand Canyon, 88-51, on Jan. 11. Despite their record, Utah Valley is led by Katie Kuklok, who averages 18.7 ppg and is near the top in several national categories. Kuklok ranks second in the nation in three-point field-goal percentage (49.0%) as well as in free-throw percentage (94.4%). She also ranks sixth in three-point field-goals per game (3.36). As a team, the Wolverines rank 20th in DI three-point field-goal percentage (37.4%).
Annual Play 4Kay Game Set For Feb. 1: Seattle U will hold their annual Play 4Kay game to benefit breast cancer research on Feb. 1 as they host Idaho. The team has set a goal of raising $2,014 and, if the goal is met, Coach Bonvicini will be pied in the face by the person/team who raises the most money.
