Seattle U Hosts Aggies and Broncs in WAC Home Opening Weekend: Seattle University women’s basketball (6-9, 1-1 WAC) returns home for their first home game since Dec. 14 and will host New Mexico State (4-10, 1-0 WAC) in their Western Athletic Conference home opener on Jan. 9 followed by UTPA on Jan. 11. The Redhawks traveled to Chicago State and Kansas City last weekend to open WAC play on the road, earning their first conference win of the season at Chicago State on Jan 2. Shephard Passes 1000 Career Points Mark: Sylvia Shephard became the 14th player in program history to pass the 1000 career point mark with her first of two made free throws at the 1:29 mark of the first half at Kansas City on Jan 4. Shephard joins fellow seniors Kacie Sowell and Ashley Ward in the elite club. She will be honored in a ceremony prior to Thursday’s WAC home opener.

Shephard Grabs 500th Rebound: Senior Sylvia Shephard passed the 500 career rebound mark on Dec. 28 at UC Santa Barbara, joining teammate Kacie Sowell who surpassed the mark in 2012-13.
Scouting New Mexico State (4-10, 1-0 WAC): New Mexico State opened conference season with a 66-63 victory vs. WAC newcomer Grand Canyon on Jan. 4, snapping a seven-game losing streak which began on Nov. 30. Danesia Williams averages a team high 17.8 ppg while September Offutt is grabbing a 7.3 rpg. The Aggies’ opponents are outscoring them, 72.3-67.6 ppg, as well as outrebounding them, 41.5-37.5 rpg. Last season, the Redhawks went 3-0 vs. NMSU, in Las Cruces (60-54 on Jan. 10), in Seattle (78-62 on Feb. 9), and in Las Vegas at the WAC Tournament (77-53 on Mar. 13).
Scouting UTPA (7-7, 1-0 WAC as of Jan. 7): UTPA earned their first ever WAC win on Jan. 2, defeating Grand Canyon, 60-58, in their conference home opener, as they had previously lost five of their last six prior games. Shawnte’ Goff leads the Broncs in scoring, averaging 10.8 ppg, while Brittany Bush is grabbing a squad-high 7.4 rpg and has recorded 25 blocks this season. UTPA is being narrowly outscored by their opponents, 62.2-60.9 ppg, but the Broncs are committing fewer turnovers than their competition, 20.9-16.6 ppg. This will be the first ever meeting between the Redhawks and Broncs.
