Redhawks Fly to Midwest to Open WAC Schedule: After closing their non-conference schedule with three straight road contests, falling in their last two contests by just five combined points, Seattle University women’s basketball (5-8) travels to Chicago State (Dec. 2) and Kansas City (Dec. 4) to open their Western Athletic Conference slate. As of Dec. 30, Sylvia Shephard is just 17 points away from becoming the 14th player in program history to pass 1000 career points mark. Sports Star of the Year: Head coach Joan Bonvicini is one of six nominees for the Seattle Sports Commission’s Female Sports Star of the Year at the 79th annual MTR Western Sports Star of the Year Awards on Jan. 22, 2014. WAC Tournament All-Session Tickets Now on Sale: All-session tickets for the WAC Basketball Tournament March 12-15 are now available by calling the Redhawk Ticket Office at (206) 398-GOSU.

Shephard Grabs 500th Rebound: Senior Sylvia Shephard passed the 500 career rebound mark on Dec. 28 at UC Santa Barbara, joining teammate Kacie Sowell who surpassed the mark in 2012-13.

Scouting Chicago State (2-9): Chicago State will host Loyola Chicago on Dec. 31 in their non-conference finale before hosting Seattle U in their first ever WAC contest. The Cougars won their season opener vs. Indiana Institute of Technology on Nov. 9, not winning another contest until Dec. 20 at Southern Illinois, 55-51. Leading CSU in scoring is Paris Williams, averaging 14.5 ppg, while Chanel Wilson-Stewart grabs a squad-high 7.2 rpg. Angela Jackson is in her 11th season as head coach of the Cougars and is the program’s all-time wins leader with 120.

Scouting Kansas City (4-9): Kansas City is set to host Idaho on Thursday in their inaugural WAC contest before hosting the Redhawks on Sunday. The Kangaroos closed their non-conference schedule with a pair of losses at San Jose State and at home versus Western Illinois. UMKC’s last win came on Dec. 18 at San Francisco, 70-62, and their last win at home was on Dec. 15 vs. Texas Southern, 80-79. Eilise O’Connor leads the team, averaging 19.8 ppg and Kim Nezianya averages a team high 8.3 rpg. In her second season at the helm, Marsha Frese was previously the Associate Head Coach at Northern Illinois University where she spent two seasons.
