Seattle University women’s basketball (3-6) opened up the contest with an 8-0 run but hot shooting by the Toreros in the second half ensured a 79-56 win for undefeated San Diego (9-0).

Kaylee Best (Seattle, Wash.) opened up the contest with a jumper just thirty seconds in as the Redhawks started the game with an 8-0 run in the first three minutes.

Katelyn McDaniel added the Toreros first points at 17:06 on a three-point play, but Seattle U would lead by as many as nine, 14-5, at 14:31 after a Kacie Sowell (Ventura, Calif.) layup.

Kameron Knutson brought San Diego within three, 14-11, at 13:08 but Ashley Ward (Irvine, Calif.) put USD ahead by six, 17-11, on a layup and subsequent free throw following the foul.

McDaniel drove in two straight layups nearly a minute and a half apart to close the margin to two and Amy Kame would tie the game at 17 with 9:57 remaining in the first half.

Malina Hood would gain the first lead for San Diego at 9:24, 20-17, with a three-pointer, but Taelor Ross (Vancouver, Wash.) would regain the one-point lead for the Redhawks with a jumper at 8:47.

Just over and under the five minute mark, Kame gave San Diego their largest lead of the first half to that point, 31-23, on a three-pointer and a jumper.

Katherine Hamilton would extend the Torero lead to 14 by 2:20, 38-24, on an overall 18-3 run and Alysse Barlow would hit a jumper with 21 seconds remaining in the half as USD led by 16 at halftime.

McDaniel opened up the second half with a 6-0 run to put San Diego ahead by 22, 48-26, at 17:37 before nearly three scoreless minutes by either team.

San Diego would lead by at least 20 until the 8:35 mark of the second half when a layup by Sowell would bring the Redhawks within 19, 60-41, as part of an overall 8-0 SU run.

The Redhawks would come within 15, 60-45, at 7:10 on four straight SU free throws, but the Toreros would lead again by 20 plus just two minutes later.

Wilma Afunugo (Plano, Texas) and Sowell would drive in layups with just under four minutes remaining while Best and Ross would add a pair of jumpers, but San Diego came away with the win, 79-56, to extend their perfect season record.

Ward led the Redhawks with 16 points while Sowell added 13. Rebounding nearly even, 37-36 in San Diego’s favor, the Toreros outshot the Redhawks in overall field goal percentage (51.8 to 29.8 percent) and from behind the three-point line (44.4 to 22.2 percent). SU posted the better percentage from the free-throw line (70.3 to 60.7 percent).

Seattle U has nearly an entire week until their next competition due to finals and will host Montana State on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. in their final home game before conference play begins.
