Seattle University women’s basketball head coach Joan Bonvicini announces the signing of two student-athletes who will attend school and compete for the Redhawks as part of the class of 2018. Ashlyn Lewey (Spokane, Wash.) and Jacinta Beckley (Paraparaumu Beach, New Zealand) will join the Seattle U women’s basketball team starting with the 2014-15 season, each with four years of eligibility remaining.

“We are very excited about our new additions to our basketball program,” said head coach Joan Bonvicini. “Both players add size and versatility to our wing position and are exceptional students.”

ASHLYN LEWEY – Mead High School (Spokane, Wash.)

A three-year varsity letterwinner at Mead High School in Spokane, Wash., Ashlyn Lewey helped lead the Panthers to a state championship, a regional championship, and a district championship, also named GSL All-State WIAA 4A Honorable Mention in 2013. In 2010, she was named Team MVP and in 2013, was named Most Improved, averaging 11 points and 10 rebounds, and scoring a single game career high 32 points. Lewey also plays soccer and, outside of athletics, is a member of the Spanish Club and Honor Roll.

Bonvicini on Lewey: “Ashlyn is an outstanding addition to our basketball program and Seattle University. She is a multifaceted player who can contribute from the three-point line, by grabbing a rebound, or giving an assist. She is also an honor student at Mead High School and won a state basketball title last season. She is a high IQ player that will add good size to our perimeter players.”

JACINTA BECKLEY – Paraparaumu College (Wellington, New Zealand)

Jacinta Beckley, a guard/forward from Paraparaumu College in Wellington, New Zealand, has vast National Team experience, including competing with the New Zealand U18 Koru Team (2011, 2012), U18 National Women’s Team (2012), and U20 National Women’s Team (2013). She was named to the U23 and U19 National Tournament Teams in 2013 and played for regional and national representative teams for U15, U17, U19, U21, and U23 (2009-2013). Beckley was also named Team MVP (2009, 2010, 2013), Most Outstanding (2011-13), and Sportswoman of the Year (2012, 13). Outside of basketball, Beckley has also competed in netball and volleyball, where she was named MVP in 2009 and 2013, respectively, and competed on Regional Tournament teams.

Bonvicini on Beckley: “Jacinta is the first player we have recruited from New Zealand and has represented her country on numerous national teams. She is a versatile player who can play the guard, forward or high post and can score in numerous ways. She is an outstanding perimeter shooter and ball handler and she is expected to contribute immediately.”
