Gonzalez led the WAC during conference play with seven goals, 50 shots, and 17 points, as well as three game-winning goals in league play versus San Jose State, UNLV, and Bakersfield. Overall, he leads the WAC with 12 goals and 27 points. He was named WAC Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 14-20 after scoring three goals in two WAC road victories at UNLV (Oct. 18) and Bakersfield (Oct. 20). Earlier this season, he led the nation in NCAA Division I goals, currently tied for sixth in total goals. He was also named GoSeattleU.com Featured Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 17, 2013.
Bjornethun anchored the Redhawk backline that limited conference opponents to just nine goals in 10 WAC matches, the best among league members in conference play. The Redhawks also posted four shutouts during conference games and Bjornethun ranked in the top 10 in assists during WAC play. Making his first career start and appearance at UMBC on Aug. 30, Bjornethun recorded his first career assist on a goal in the team’s 4-0 shutout at San Jose State on Oct. 5.
Fewing, in his 20th season overall and second season of the current tenure at Seattle U, led the Redhawks to an undefeated conference schedule in the team’s first year in the league (7-0-3). As the WAC Regular Season title winners, Fewing led Seattle U to earn the No. 1 seed in this weekend’s conference tournament and a first round bye. Fewing has posted an overall 231-146-31 record during his SU career.
The Redhawks had three First Team All-WAC honorees including Gonzalez, Ian Hines-Ike (Littleton, Colo.), and Jake Feener (Rocklin, Calif.), and two Second Team All-WAC honorees including Bjornethun and Bobby Segal (Portland, Ore.). Feener led Seattle U with two WAC (Defensive) Player of the Week honors in 2013 including, most recently, the week of Nov. 4-10 and earlier for the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 6.
College Sports Madness also named Gonzalez WAC Offensive Player of the Year and Pete Fewing WAC Coach of the Year, naming Gonzalez and Feener First Team All-Conference and Bjornethun, Segal, and Hamza Haddadi (Shoreline, Wash.) Second Team All-Conference.
Prior to the start of the season, Gonzalez and Feener were named to the WAC Preseason All-Conference team, while Gonzalez was also named College Sports Madness Preseason First Team All-WAC.
Seattle U enters this weekend’s WAC tournament as the No. 1 seed, earning a first round bye, and will face the winner of No. 4 Air Force/No. 5 Houston Baptist on Friday, Nov. 15 at 3 p.m. MT/2 p.m. PT. The winner of the semifinal matchup will advance to the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 12 p.m. MT/11 a.m. PT., with the winner of the tournament receiving the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
