Redhawks Return Home on Top of the League: Seattle University men’s soccer (5-8-2, 4-0-1 WAC) moved into sole possession of not only the west region of the Western Athletic Conference, but the entire WAC standings with wins at UNLV and Bakersfield last weekend. They are the only undefeated team in conference play, currently on a five-game WAC unbeaten streak and four-game overall unbeaten streak. Jake Feener and Miguel Gonzalez (tied) are each leading the nation in NCAA Division I saves and goals, respectively. This Weekend’s Promotions: Friday, Oct. 25 will be Military Appreciation Day, as Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) will have an honor guard at the match and Senior Airman Benjamin Taylor will sing the National Anthem. Miguel Gonzalez Named WAC Offensive Player of the Week (Oct. 14-20): Gonzalez received his first career WAC Player of the Week honor, second for the team this season, after scoring three goals over the weekend as SU defeated UNLV, 2-0, and Bakersfield, 2-1, on the road. He scored both goals at UNLV, including the game-winner in both matches. Gonzalez was also named WAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.
Scouting Air Force (1-9-2, 1-1-2 WAC): The U.S. Air Force Academy’s sole win of the season came two weekends ago vs. Houston Baptist, 3-2, on Oct. 13. They have also tied UMKC (Oct. 11) and Houston Baptist (Oct. 20), but started off the season on an eight-game losing streak. Zachary Modly leads the Falcons with three goals and two assists, as well as 35 shots, 15 on goal. In goal, Jake Schenk has seen the most time, making 39 saves in eight games played. Joey Speshock and Brian Hoxie have also seen time in goal, as Speshock has recorded 14 saves in five appearances and Hoxie has made one appearance in 2013. This will be the two teams’ first meeting as WAC foes, as each were previously members of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) for men’s soccer. Doug Hill, a 1983 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, is in his seventh season as head coach.
Scouting Grand Canyon (2-8-1, 1-3-0 WAC): Grand Canyon won their first match of the season, 2-1, at Nebraska-Omaha, also recently defeating Houston Baptist, 3-0, on Oct. 18, but went on an eight-game winless streak in between the two victories, including a 2-2 tie at Stetson on Sept. 8. This will be the first meeting between the Redhawks and Antelopes as Division I and WAC foes, as GCU is in it’s first year of DI reclassification and WAC membership. Kyle Ciliento leads the team with four goals and two assists while Alberto Sanchez Garcia has taken a team-high 38 shots, 15 on goal. Joshua Zehring has played all 11 complete matches in goal, recording 40 saves and allowing 19 goals. Head coach Petar Draksin is in his 27th season at GCU and his 21st season as head coach of the Antelopes.
Jake Feener Named WAC Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 30-Oct. 6): Feener received Seattle U’s first ever WAC Player of the Week nod for his contribution in the team’s 4-0 shutout at San Jose State to open conference play. He made eight saves, marking the sixth time this season he has recorded eight plus saves in a game. The match also marked Feener’s seventh career shutout.
Let There Be Light: Championship Field, the home of Seattle U men’s and women’s soccer, recently received a significant enhancement in the form of field lights. The installation of lights took place throughout early fall 2013, with the first ever match at Championship Field “under the lights” vs. No. 3 Washington on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013.
Bakersfield (10/20): Men’s soccer remained on top of the Western Athletic Conference standings with a 2-1 come-from-behind win at Bakersfield in league action. The Redhawks are on a four-game undefeated streak and have won or tied six of their last eight matches. In the 33rd minute, Bakersfield struck first, taking the early lead, as Hugo Vinales scored his first goal of the season on a cross by Jonathan Colunga. The Roadrunners held on to the 1-0 lead at the halftime break. In the 74th minute, Ian Hines-Ike equalized the score for the Redhawks off a direct kick following a Bakersfield yellow card. Less than 10 minutes later, in the 82nd minute, Miguel Gonzalez scored the game-winner following a long run after a turnover, shooting the ball low and to the left corner. Gonzalez led the Redhawks with four shots, three on goal, while Justice Duerksen also contributed three shots. As a team, the Redhawks outshot the Roadrunners, 16-14. In goal, Jake Feener made five saves in the win for SU while Hector Valdez also made five saves for CSUB.
UNLV (10/18): Miguel Gonzalez earned his third multiple-goal match of the season, and the Seattle University defense held off the UNLV attack as the Redhawks defeated the Rebels, 2-0, in Western Athletic Conference men’s soccer action at Peter Johann Field. The two teams alternated scoring chances early in the first half, with UNLV taking three shots in the first 27 minutes of the half and Seattle U taking two shots. The Redhawks nearly took the lead in the 30th minute, but Justice Duerksen’s shot hit the post, and Jonathan Massimino’s attempt a minute later sailed high. In the 33rd minute, Massimino set up Gonzalez, who blasted a shot from about 20 yards out inside the left post for his 10th goal of the season. Four minutes later, the same combination struck again, as Massimino stole the ball from a UNLV defender inside the box and fed Gonzalez, who once again found the left side of the net for his second tally of the night. UNLV had a solid scoring chance seven minutes into the second half, but a header directed on net by Corey Ackley was stopped by Redhawk goalie Jake Feener. The Rebels earned back-to-back chances in the 71st minute, but Salvador Bernal’s shot was blocked, and the follow-up chance from Carlos Lara sailed just wide.Although the Rebels took more shots than the Redhawks (17-10), only two of UNLV’s shots were on goal, and Feener was able to turn away both of them. Rodrigo Fuentes led all players with seven total shots, while Bernal took five shots, but only one of the 12 combined was on frame. Gonzalez led Seattle U with five total shots.
