Seattle University men’s soccer forward Miguel Gonzalez (Yelm, Wash.) has been named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 14-20. This is Gonzalez’s first career WAC honor and the team’s second, as goalkeeper Jake Feener (Rocklin, Calif.) was named Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 6. Gonzalez was also named WAC Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.

“I am very proud of Miguel,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “He’s been scoring some great goals, some clutch goals and he is versatile. His work rate on the field, all over the field, has been terrific. The work he did in the offseason to come back this season after knee surgery is very impressive to me. He’s a terrific team player and is very humble and he’s been a real leader for us. It’s been a pleasure having him on the squad, he’s extremely coachable. He really has a passion to play and is always putting in extra work. He’s a great example of extra work paying off.”

Gonzalez scored three goals in two WAC victories on the road over the weekend, scoring both goals in the team’s 2-0 shutout at UNLV (Oct. 18) and recording the game-winner in the 2-1 win at Bakersfield (Oct. 20). Gonzalez leads the WAC in goals (12) and points (25), also tied for the NCAA Division I lead in total goals.

Kansas City’s Michael Oakley was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week, allowing just one goal over the weekend as the Kangaroos defeated Air Force, 2-1, and shut out Grand Canyon, 2-0.

After three weekends of conference play, Seattle U (5-8-2, 4-0-1 WAC) sits on top of the WAC standings with a 4-0-1 league record as the only undefeated team in WAC action.

The Redhawks return home to host Air Force “under the lights” on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. and Grand Canyon on Sunday, Oct. 27. Sunday’s match will be the team’s annual game to raise money and awareness for cystic fibrosis research.

The nominees for each position are as follows:

Other Offensive Nominees: Alberto Sanchez (Grand Canyon), Tobenna Uzo (Houston Baptist), Tato Chiaparro (Kansas City)

Other Defensive Nominees: Joshua Zehring (Grand Canyon), Jake Feener (Seattle U)
