With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, several of Seattle University’s athletics teams will be hosting pink-themed events this weekend to educate people about breast health and raise money towards breast cancer research.

The Seattle U cross country team will host its first-ever Pink Meet as it organizes the annual Emerald City Open Saturday, Oct. 19, starting at 10:30 a.m. at Lower Woodland Park. The squad has partnered with Check Your Boobies, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating women about breast health in a frank, fun, and fear-free environment. The organization will be present at the meet with informational materials about breast health, and the Redhawks will be wearing pink apparel to support the cause.

Later Saturday night, the Redhawk volleyball team will be holding its annual Pink Match when it takes on Kansas City at the Connolly Center starting at 7 p.m. Balloons have been donated, and fans are encouraged to write messages on those balloons. All proceeds from popcorn sales and special giveaways, including a volleyball signed by the 2013 Seattle U volleyball team, will be donated to Susan G. Komen For The Cure.

Sunday, Oct. 20, the women’s soccer team holds its Pink Match, welcoming Bakersfield to Championship Field for a 12 noon contest. Once again, proceeds from popcorn sales and special giveaways, which on Sunday will include items from Seattle Reign FC of the National Women’s Soccer League, will benefit Susan G. Komen For The Cure. Pink ribbons will be available for fans to wear in support of breast cancer research.

Admission to the cross country meet is free for everyone, while tickets for Saturday night’s volleyball match and Sunday’s soccer match will be available at the entrance to each event 60 minutes before the start of the matches.
