Seattle University men’s soccer (3-8-2, 2-0-1 WAC) found themselves down early but fought back and battled preseason WAC favorite, Bakersfield (3-6-2, 1-1-1 WAC), to a double overtime draw, 2-2.

“We’re making progress because we were down, 1-0, and we came back,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “Then we were down, 2-1, and we came back again. We had a lot of good chances and we’re competing a lot better than we were at the beginning of the season. I can’t fault the guys for effort, especially because we played two games in less than 48 hours. I think the guys are starting to have a stronger desire to win, which is critical. We’ll travel to Bakersfield and UNLV and take care of business down there.”

In the fifth minute, David Velasquez broke through for the Roadrunners, giving them the early lead with a ball from the left side to the top right back of the net.

In the 26th minute, Miguel Gonzalez (Yelm, Wash.) worked the ball past the keeper’s right side, evening the score on a cross by Hamza Haddadi (Shoreline, Wash.).

The score even, 1-1, at the half, the Redhawks had their next best chance to take the lead on a shot by Jeff Rose (Carmichael, Calif.) in the 50th minute that hit the post, appearing to nearly make its way into the net. Justice Duerksen (San Clemente, Calif.) added a similarly close shot in the 55th minute as the ball bounced off the keeper’s hand over the goal.

In the 69th minute, Bakersfield regained the lead on a goal by Manny Carrillo off of a free kick by Giovanni Godoy.

Just three minutes later, in the 72nd minute, Seattle U would again even the score on a penalty kick by Gonzalez, his team-leading ninth goal of the season and second goal of the match.

Neither team would be able to add to their tally for the remainder of regulation and the Redhawks took their second game of the weekend into overtime.

Each goalie recorded at least one save in the first overtime period, but neither team was able to capitalize on chances, as the match went into a second overtime period. The Roadrunners and Redhawks traded shots, two apiece, in the second overtime, but the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

With the tie, Seattle U remains undefeated in Western Athletic Conference play as they have won or tied three of their last four matches.

Gonzalez took eight shots for Seattle U, just one away from tying his career high nine shots in his first match as a Redhawk on August 24, 2012 vs. Cal Poly. Duerksen added a career high four shots for SU.

In goal, Jake Feener (Rocklin, Calif.) made eight saves, increasing his NCAA Division I leading total to 91, while Anthony Perez also made eight saves in goal.

After playing three matches in six days at home, Seattle U hits the road next weekend, mirroring this weekend’s schedule as they will face UNLV on Oct. 18 and Bakersfield on Oct. 20. The SU women’s soccer team returns home for their first ever game “under the lights” on Friday, Oct. 18, hosting Utah Valley.
