“I’m thrilled to get a win in overtime,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “We’ve gone into overtime five times, in almost half our games this season – two wins, two losses, and a tie. But the last two here have been wins, so I’m pleased. We’re a young team trying to find our way. Their goalkeeper made a fantastic save a minute before Jonathan scored. What we said to them was ‘Let’s make sure the last pass has quality’. Miguel got his composure and Jonathan did the rest. The guys executed tonight and I’m really happy for them. It’s great to start the league schedule 2-0 and UNLV battled. Ian Hines-Ike also scored a great goal, I was so happy to see him put one in the back of the net.”
The Redhawks best early chance to score came at the end of the first half, in the 44th minute as Miguel Gonzalez (Yelm, Wash.) shot back-to-back headers towards the goal, but UNLV goalkeeper Ryan Harding came up with key saves.
In the 51st minute, Salvador Bernal put UNLV ahead on a cross by Julian Portugal, lining up and shooting the ball straight from the middle.
In the 69th minute, Seattle U evened the score, 1-1, on the first career goal by Ian Hines-Ike (Littleton, Colo.) off a free kick.
Gonzalez added two more late shots in the second half, but could not sink them into the goal, as the Redhawks forced their fifth overtime match of the season.
Neither team able to score through the first overtime, Gonzalez and Kyle Bjornethun (Snohomish, Wash.) took the only two shots of the period.
The Redhawks outshooting the Rebels, 5-1, in the second overtime period, Massimino broke through in the 109th minute on a cross by Gonzalez for the game-winning goal.
Gonzalez led the Redhawks with five shots, two on goal, while Hines-Ike notched four shots for SU. As a team, SU outshot UNLV, 20-12.
In goal, Jake Feener (Rocklin, Calif.) made eight saves, allowing one goal, while Harding made seven saves, allowing both goals, including the game-winner.
Seattle U takes the No. 1 spot in the WAC West standings with the win and will host Bakersfield on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.
