The Seattle University women’s golf team fought through rainy and windy conditions Monday as the first round of the Rose City Collegiate tournament, hosted by Portland State University at the Langdon Farms Golf Club, was completed.
Nicole Gaddie (Salt Lake City, Utah) was the top Redhawk after 18 holes, finishing the day in a tie for 17th place after an opening-round 76 (+4). The senior collected three of the team’s five birdies during the day, using her experience to post a solid score despite the adverse conditions.
Jamie Huo (Kent, Wash.) shot 79 (+7) to end the day in a tie for 40th place, as did teammate Alexus Song (Auburn, Wash.), but because Song was declared an individual player before the start of the tournament, her score could not be used as part of the Redhawks’ team score. Juhee Lee (Manhattan, Ore.) shot 82 (+10) to finish in a tie for 60th place after the first round, Amanda Beyke (Federal Way, Wash.) is currently in 69th place after shooting 84 (+12), and Taylor Shweiki (Clovis, Calif.) posted a score of 93 (+21) to end the day in 84th place.
As a team, Seattle U combined for a first-round score of 321 (+33), currently in 13th place, but only 10 strokes behind a tie for seventh place. Oregon State holds a six-stroke lead over Gonzaga and UC Irvine thanks to Anica Yoo, who shot 69 (-3) to stablish a two-stroke advantage in the individual standings.
Because of the consistent rain in the Pacific Northwest over the past three days, the tournament was reduced from 54 holes to 36 holes. The second and final round of the Rose City Collegiate is scheduled for Tuesday morning, Oct. 1.
