Seattle University women’s soccer’s Brianna Smallidge (Port Orchard, Wash.) has been named the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 30-Oct 6. This is Smallidge’s second honor of the season and of her career after being named for the week of Aug. 26-Sept. 1. This is the third straight week in which the Redhawks have received at least one honoree, bringing SU’s 2013 total to six.

Smallidge recorded all 180 minutes in goal in the Redhawks’ pair of 2-0 shutout victories at Bakersfield and Utah Valley. She registered nine total saves in the two matches, five on Friday and four on Sunday, and a perfect 1.000 save percentage. These matches marked four complete shutouts for Smallidge thus far in 2013.

Smallidge was also named WAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.

To date this season, Smallidge has made all 12 starts in goal, recording 39 saves, a .750 save pct., and a 1.10 GAA.

“Brianna was very solid for us this weekend and continues to improve,” said head coach Julie Woodward. “She is an incredible shot-stopper and had some big one-on-one saves that basically won the games for us this weekend. Her potential is pretty incredible and at her rate of improvement, I look forward to seeing her growth throughout the rest of this season. She has done a great job anchoring our defense.”

After three weekends of conference play, Seattle U sits on top of the league standings with a 5-0-0 record in WAC action. The Redhawks have recorded five straight shutouts, six straight wins, and have scored 17 straight unanswered goals dating back to Sept. 20.

SU (8-2-2, 5-0-0 WAC) will travel to Phoenix, Ariz. for their lone match of the weekend at Grand Canyon on Friday, Oct. 11 at 5:45 PT. They will return home for the team’s first ever home game “under the lights” on Friday, Oct. 18 vs. Utah Valley at 7 p.m.
