Redhawks to Host First WAC Opponent, Final Non-Conference Opponent: After three straight games on the road, Seattle University women’s soccer (2-2-2) returns home for the first time in the month of September to host Grand Canyon in their Western Athletic Conference home opener (Sept. 20, 4:30 p.m.) and Cal Poly in their final non-conference match of 2013 (Sept. 22, 12 noon). Each day will also be a doubleheader with the men’s soccer team, as they host Georgia State at 2 p.m. on Friday and Florida Gulf Coast at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Redhawks Tied for Best Winning Percentage in Non-Conference WAC Standings: After four weeks of non-conference play, Seattle U and Kansas City sit atop the league’s non-conference standings. Seattle U is 2-2-2 while Kansas City is 3-3-1, both with a .500 winning percentage.
Leaders of the WAC: Among members of the Western Athletic Conference, Seattle U ranks second in goals per game (1.33), is tied for second in shutouts (1) and ranks third in goals (8), assists (5), assists per game (0.83), points (21) and fewest goals allowed (12).
Scouting Grand Canyon (1-5-0): Grand Canyon enters conference play with a 1-5-0 overall record through four weeks of non-conference matches. The Lopes’ sole win came on Sept. 6 at Colorado State, with three losses just by a one goal margin (Valparaiso in OT, AIr Force, and Northern Arizona). Cassie Beckwith has scored one goal for GCU and Jessica Fitzgerald has logged a team-high nine shots. In goal, Catherine Lena has started all six matches, making 22 saves, while Daryl Bradley made three saves in an appearance at Colorado State. Stevie Gill is in his sixth season at the helm, a former captain of the GCU men’s soccer team which was inducted into the 2010 GCU Hall of Fame after winning the program’s lone Division II National Championship title in 1996.
Scouting Cal Poly (4-2-0): The Mustangs opened up the 2013 season on a four-game winning streak, topping Loyola Marymount, CSU Bakersfield, Sacramento State, and San Jose State, but has dropped the last two contests at No. 10 Baylor and No. 20 Texas A&M. Elise Krieghoff has recorded a team-high 10 goals, 46 shots (29 SOG), and two game-winners thus far in 2013. In goal, Alyssa Giannetti has started all six games, recording 32 saves, while Megan Heddinger and Heather Rouhier have each made one appearance. In his 22nd year at the helm, Alex Crozier is a four-time Big West Conference Coach of the Year (1996, 1997, 2002, 2003), also named 1993 NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year.
