Seattle University men’s soccer played Oregon State (4-1-0) to overtime, their second straight such contest, but the Redhawks fell, 2-1, on a golden goal by OSU’s Brenden Anderson.

“Our guys cannot be faulted for effort or commitment to the game,” said head coach Pete Fewing. “They really gave it everything they had and I was really proud of the effort. We have yet to get a win, but we played our best soccer tonight so far this year. Jake Feener has been great in goal and Miguel Gonzalez scored a terrific goal today. Three overtime games in our first five is part of the growing process.

In the 26th minute, Miguel Gonzalez (Yelm, Wash.) was able to break through on his second of two straight shots, with a header into the box, assisted by Hamza Haddadi (Shoreline, Wash.) and Chase Hanson (Kent, Wash.) to put the Redhawks ahead, 1-0.

Less than two minutes later, in the 28th minute, Khiry Shelton, with the assist by Devonte Small, evened the score for the Beavers with a shot over SU goalkeeper Jake Feener (Rocklin, Calif.) into the side netting.

The score remained 1-1 through the halftime break and to the end of the regulation buzzer, as the Redhawks recorded their second straight overtime contest, third overall of 2013.

Near the end of overtime, in the 100th minute, Anderson received the pass from Will Seymore, heading the ball into the goal to give Oregon State the 2-1 win.

Feener represented Seattle U in goal for the complete game, recording eight saves. Matt Bersano made three saves in goal for the Beavers. Gonzalez led the Redhawks with seven shots, four on goal. Overall, Oregon State outshot Seattle U, 19-14.

Seattle U (0-4-1) faces Portland on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 12 p.m. in their final game of a six game road swing to open the season. They host Georgia State on Friday, Sept. 20 in their regular season home opener at 2 p.m. as part of a doubleheader, as women’s soccer hosts Grand Canyon in their Western Athletic Conference home opener at 4:30 p.m.
