ON THE ROAD AGAIN: Seattle University leaves Monday morning for Eugene, Ore., for a match against the Oregon Ducks Tuesday, Sept. 10, that will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network. Over the weekend, the Redhawks will play a neutral-site match against College of Charleston Friday morning before evening matches at Loyola Marymount Friday and at Long Beach State Saturday.
PAC-12 NETWORK: Krista Blunk and Kelli Tennant will call the match live on Pac-12 Network, which can be found on channels 430 (Washington), 431 (National), and 628 (HD) for Comcast subscribers, channels 123 (Washington), 124 (National), 723 (Washington HD), and 724 (National HD) for Wave Broadband subscribers, or channel 413 (National HD) for those who use Dish Network.
GONZAGA INVITATIONAL: After consecutive losses to Eastern Washington and Washington in Seattle, the Redhawks headed to Spokane, Wash., for the Gonzaga Invitational. Their first match was against the Arizona State Sun Devils, and Seattle U pushed the Pac-12 team to the limit in the second set, going ahead by as much as eight points and earning three chances to close out the set. However, Arizona State fought back to win the second set, and used that momentum to complete the sweep. The next day, Seattle U suffered similar sweeps at the hands of Gonzaga and UNLV. Allison Farley was named to the All-Tournament Team after collecting 20 kills and eight total blocks in the three matches. Matea Mamic had a strong match against Gonzaga, leading the Redhawks with 10 kills in 18 attack attempts. Stephanie Stoll also played well, collecting six kills against Arizona State and five kills against UNLV.
SCOUTING OREGON: The Ducks fell to 3-3 after losses at nationally-ranked schools Michigan State and Michigan last weekend. As a team, Oregon is hitting .250 while holding opponents to a .212 hitting percentage. Martenne Bettendorf leads the team with 3.83 kills per set, followed by Liz Brenner at 3.71 kills per set and Ariana Williams at 3.12 kills per set. Setter Lauren Plum became Oregon’s all-time assists leader over the weekend and leads the current team with 208 assists and six service aces, plus she is second with 53 digs. Williams leads the team at the net with 15 total blocks, while Amanda Benson is the team leader in digs with 79 so far this season.
SCOUTING COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON: The Cougars are 7-0 heading into Friday’s match against Seattle U, having won weekend tournaments at Georgia Tech and on their own home floor. As a team, the Cougars are hitting .294 while holding opponents to a .133 hitting percentage. Darcy Dorton leads the team offensively with 3.59 kills per set, plus she has contributed 2.09 digs per set as well as 12 total blocks so far this season. Three different players have held the setting duties in the first seven matches. Defensively, Emily Neideffer leads the team at the net with 15 total blocks, while Andi Zbojniewicz paces the team with 78 defensive digs. This will be the first meeting ever between Seattle U and College of Charleston.
SCOUTING LOYOLA MARYMOUNT: The Lions head into the weekend with a 3-3 record after defeating Lamar to close out its participation in UTSA’s tournament last weekend. As a team, LMU is hitting .221 and holding opponents to a .201 hitting percentage. Kathleen Luft is averaging 3.53 kills per set while Litara Keil is averaging 3.33 kills per set. Hannah Tedrow has been the Lions’ main setter, averaging 10.11 assists per set, while Betsi Metter leads the team with 20 service aces and 109 defensive digs. At the net, Caitlin DeWitt leads the team with 15 total blocks, followed closely by Rachelle Suaava with 14 total blocks.
SCOUTING LONG BEACH STATE: The 49ers enter the weekend with a 2-4 record, but three of the four losses have come in five sets. As a team, Long Beach State is hitting .222, but allowing opponents to hit .249. Delainey Aigner-Swesey leads the team with 3.59 kills per set, followed by Alex Reid with 2.70 kills per set. Erin Juley has been the team’s setter throughout the early part of the season, averaging 9.52 assists per set. Chisom Okpala leads the way at the net with 31 total blocks, while Tyler Jackson leads the squad with 65 defensive digs, just ahead of Aigner-Swesey’s 64 digs.
