“After playing 110 minutes against a good opponent on Friday evening, I was impressed with the fight we had left in us,” said head coach Julie Woodward. “Purdue is a pretty special team and they will have a great year. This game gave us a good idea of the specific things we need to improve on. We had many individuals step up today and provide great effort. Kelly [Beck], Jacqui [Wallis], and Sarah [Coluccio] played very well for us.”
In the third minute, Purdue’s Maddy Williams put the Boilermakers ahead, 1-0, scoring her sixth goal of the season on an intercepted deflection, dribbling up the right flank and into the top of the goal.
In the 23rd minute, Stephanie Verdoia (Salt Lake City, Utah), assisted by Heather Thomas (Woodinville, Wash.), tied the game on a free kick from the west sideline at midfield before flicking the ball over Purdue keeper Jordan Ginther’s head.
Just seven and a half minutes later, in the 30th minute, Alex Hairston regained the lead for the Boilermakers, driving the ball in from the right side and sinking it into the top half of the net. Hadley Stuart made the assist on the goal.
Fighting back, Jacqui Wallis (Las Oswego, Ore.) scored her first goal of the season in the 40th minute to re-tie the match, 2-2. Verdoia and Kat Prati (Moorpark, Calif.), with the assists, made two short right-to-left passes to Wallis before sinking the ball into the wide open net.
In the Redhawks’ second overtime match of the weekend, neither team was able to add to their score as the contest ended in a draw, 2-2.
Verdoia led the Redhawks with two shots, both on goal, while Williams led Purdue with six shots, two on goal. Mariah O’Neil (Tumwater, Wash.) made her first collegiate appearance for Seattle U.
Brianna Smallidge (Port Orchard, Wash.) recorded all 110 minutes in goal for the Redhawks, making eight saves. Ginther made two saves in goal for the Boilermakers.
