Seattle University men’s soccer (0-1) fell in their first match of the season at UMBC (1-0), 3-1, as the University of Maryland, Baltimore County took an early two-goal lead that the Redhawks could not overcome.

Early in the match, in the 10th minute, Pete Caringi drove in his first goal of the season for the Retrievers to give UMBC the early lead, 1-0. The goal, assisted by Stephen Ho and Gaeton Caltabiano resulted from a long pass from Caltabiano to Ho, who followed it up with a step and leading pass to Caringi.

The Retrievers would add to their score, 2-0, at the 24 minute mark as Caringi scored again, this time assisted on a dish by Kadeem Dacres.

In the 38th minute, Miguel Gonzalez (Yelm, Wash.) would add a goal for the Redhawks to narrow the score, 2-1, which remained the score going into the halftime break.

Near the end of the match, in the 84th minute, Mamadou Kansaye scored an insurance goal, assisted by Dacres to insure the UMBC win, 3-1.

Jake Feener (Rocklin, Calif.) represented Seattle U in goal with seven saves in the complete game. Phil Saunders earned the win for the Retrievers, making one save.

Gonzalez led the Redhawks with five shots, two on goal. UMBC outshot Seattle U, 20-7, as a team.

The match was also part of the Springhill Suites Arundel Mills BWI Kick-Off Classic and Gonzalez and Jeff Rose (Carmichael, Calif.) represented the Redhawks on the All-Tournament team.

Seattle U travels to Delaware for their second match of opening weekend on Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. PT.
