Scouting Boise State: The Broncos also went 1-1 last weekend, losing their first match of the season in overtime at Idaho State, 2-1, on Aug. 23 before topping Creighton at home, 2-1 on Aug. 25. Brooke Heidemann led the team with two goals and four points in week one, while Maddy McDevitt made four saves in two complete game appearances in goal. Heidemann was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 19-Aug. 25, the first such honor for the team since 2011. Last season, the Broncos fell in the first round of the MWC Tournament to Nevada, 1-0. Jim Thomas, former assistant coach at Washington, is in his first year at the helm and former Seattle U men’s assistant soccer coach Ed Moore now serves as assistant coach of the squad and Seattle U women’s soccer alumna Madison Collins also serves as an assistant coach.

Last Time Out: The Redhawks and Broncos last faced in regular season play on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011 as Boise State won, 2-0 at Championship Field.

Eastern Washington (8/25): The game remained scoreless at the half, but an offensive surge by the Redhawks following halftime led to a 2-0 Seattle U victory. Less than five minutes after the halftime break, Julia Moravec drove a shot from the right side, assisted by Stephanie Verdoia, to give the team a 1-0 lead. In the 77th minute, Verdoia added a goal of her own, a cross across the box assisted by Mary Hill to give the Redhawks a 2-0 lead. SU outshot EWU, 16-6, with 12 of the Redhawks’ shots coming in the second half.

Washington State (8/23): After a continual exchange of possession between the two teams for the first 20 minutes, Stephanie Verdoia dribbled the ball into the box before being taken down by a WSU defender, forcing a penalty kick opportunity. Julia Besagno converted on the penalty kick, giving the Redhawks a 1-0 lead. The Seattle U defense, however, could not maintain the lead, as Kailiana Johnson nudged the ball over the goal line after a free kick was blocked, tying the game 1-1 going into halftime. Just after halftime, Jocelyn Jeffers took the lead for the Cougars, 2-1, sailing a shot into the left side of the net past SU keeper Brianna Smallidge. WSU added an insurance goal just over three minutes later as Micaela Castain scored the final goal to give the Cougars the win, 3-1.
