Redhawks to Kick Off 2013 Season at Home: The Seattle University women’s soccer team will open the 2013 regular season with two of three games at home in the month of August. The Redhawks are set to open the year hosting Washington State on Friday, Aug. 23 at 5 p.m. before finishing out the first weekend of competition at Eastern Washington on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 1 p.m.

Scouting Washington State: Receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Cougars (12-6-2, 6-4-1 Pac-12 in 2012) made their fourth appearance in the past five years last season, falling in the First Round in the ninth round of penalty kicks to No. 21 (No. 4 seed) Portland. Senior Micaela Castain led WSU with 11 goals, followed by recent graduate Brandi Vega with eight, tying sophomore Kourtney Guetlein with a team-high five assists. Redshirt junior Gurveen Clair and recent graduate Ariana Byrd shared time in goal, with Clair posting 16 appearances, a 0.98 GAA, and a 8-4-2 record. In 2013, WSU will play their first six games in the state of Washington or in nearby Idaho. The Cougs are led by Keidane McAlpine who is in his second season as head coach after spending the previous six seasons at Auburn University.

Scouting Eastern Washington: The Eagles had a comeback year in 2012, with 12 points in Big Sky Conference play, tripling their point total from the previous two seasons. They tied for sixth in the Big Sky with a 6-8-4 overall record (3-3-3 conference record), winning five and tying two in a nine-game mid-season stretch. Cassie Black led the Eags with eight goals, 18 points, and 45 shots in 2012. Jamie Walker and junior Nathalie Schwery split time in goal, making 11 and seven starts, respectively.  EWU is led by coach George Hageage in his 14th season at the helm.

Seattle U Picked First in Preseason WAC Coaches Poll: In a vote of the league’s seven head coaches, the Redhawks were picked as the favorites to win the 2013 Western Athletic Conference title. Stephanie Verdoia was voted Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and Julia Besagno was named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Verdoia, Besagno, and Mary Hill were also named Preseason All-Conference.

College Sports Madness Names Preseason All-WAC Teams: College Sports Madness named Stephanie Verdoia the WAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and named Julie Woodward Coach of the Year. CSM also named Verdoia, Julia Besagno, Monique Escalera, Mary Hill, and Brianna Smallidge to the Preseason First Team All-WAC and named Julia Moravec to the Preseason Second Team All-WAC.

Melissa Busque and Carlee Norquist Join Staff: Melissa Busque, who competed for the Redhawks in 2012 and is fresh off her stint with the Canadian National Team, will be serving as the Undergraduate Student Coach for the Redhawks this season. Recent graduate Carlee Norquist will serve as the team’s Director of Operations.
