Bill Roe, the former president of USA Track & Field (USATF) and one of the leading authorities for cross country and track and field within the Pacific Northwest, will be the special guest speaker at the Seattle University track and field team’s annual end-of-the-year banquet Friday, May 31,
Roe established Club Northwest in 1972 and the Pacific Northwest Association of USA Track & Field in 1973. In 1979, he was a founding member of the USATF Board of Directors and began a term on the board in 1986 that lasted over 20 years and culminated with two terms as the organization’s president. Roe is the only person in USATF history to be elected to at least 20 years as an officer.
Roe founded Northwest Runner magazine, has coached cross country and distance running at Western Washington University since 1988, and has been an international team leader or coach nine times. He has been rated a Masters official and referee since USATF’s certification program was founded in 1980.
“There is no one in the country who knows more about track and field than Bill. We are extremely fortunate to have him speak at our event,” Seattle U head track and field coach Trisha Steidl said.
The banquet will be held in the Father LeRoux Room on the first floor of the Seattle University Student Center Friday, May 31, with a reception starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by the dinner program at 6:30 p.m. Besides Roe’s speech, Steidl and the other members of the coaching staff will talk about the just-completed season and will also honor the seniors who have completed their time within the Redhawk track and field program.
