Kaytie Bateman (Chehalis, Wash.) and Amanda Maddux (Gresham, Ore.) helped kick off the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Wednesday at Maverick Stadium, competing in the first four events of the two-day women’s heptathlon.
The day began with the 100 meter hurdles, where Bateman posted a time of 15.86 seconds (732 points) and Maddux finished in 17.23 seconds (571 points). In the high jump, Bateman cleared 1.54 meters (5’ 0.5”) for 666 points, while Maddux earned 599 points by clearing 1.48 meters (4’ 10.25”).
The competitors moved on to the shot put, where Maddux saved her best throw for last, posting a mark of 9.15 meters (30’ 0.25”) for 474 points, while Bateman collected 466 points after a throw of 9.03 meters (29’ 7.5”). In the final event of the day, the 200 meter dash, Bateman finished in 26.17 seconds (782 points), while Maddux posted a time of 29.19 seconds (540 points).
At the conclusion of the day, Bateman stood in 11th place with 2,646 points, while Maddux is in 14th place with 2,184 points. Bateman is on pace to break her own school record in the heptathlon, as she has 325 points more at this point in the event than she did when she set the record at the 2012 Great West Conference Championships.
“Kaytie had a solid day today, and is looking to close out strong tomorrow,” Seattle U assistant track and field coach Chad Pharis said.
Bateman and Maddux will close out the heptathlon Thursday, May 9, starting with the long jump at 10:30 a.m. local time, followed by the javelin throw and the 800 meter run. The rest of the Seattle University track and field team that is competing this weekend is traveling to Texas Wednesday in preparation for the bulk of the meet Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11.
