After winning their second straight Western Athletic Conference series and first WAC road series, going 2-1 at UTSA, Seattle University softball (19-24, 8-7 WAC) moved into third place in league standings. This weekend, they will host Portland State for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr. 24 at 2 p.m., a set of games originally scheduled for Apr. 10 but rescheduled due to rain. The Redhawks will then face WAC-leading New Mexico State on the road for a three-game conference series. Scouting Portland State: Brittany Hendrickson currently leads the Vikings at the plate, averaging .336 with 20 runs on 38 hits alongside seven doubles, one triple, seven home runs, and 29 RBIs.  In the circle, Anna Bertrand leads the team with a 3.31 ERA and a 13-14 record. They are currently tied for first place in the Big Sky Conference with Idaho State, after taking one of three from ISU last weekend.

Last Time Out: The two teams last faced for a four-game conference series in Portland, Ore. on Apr. 21-22, 2012, as the Vikings went 3-1 on the weekend. SU and PSU each competed in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference through last season before the softball programs moved to the Western Athletic Conference and Big Sky Conference, respectively.

Scouting New Mexico State: The Aggies are currently leading the WAC after not qualifying for the conference tournament last season (finished 2012 with a 5-13 WAC record). They have won 17 of their last 20 games, only dropping conference contests to Louisiana Tech (8-4 on Mar. 22) and Texas State (5-4 on Apr. 19). They are led at the plate by Amber Olive, averaging .405 with 35 runs on 68 hits as well as four doubles, five triples, two home runs, and 19 RBIs. Four Aggies are batting .300 or better. In the circle, NMSU’s key starter, Alex Newman, currently boasts a 1.99 ERA, a 19-9 record, and 71 strikeouts. They were picked to finish third in the preseason WAC coaches poll, receiving one first place vote.

Last Time Out: This will be the first time the Redhawks and Aggies have faced in softball.

UTSA Series (Apr. 19-20): The Redhawks won their second straight conference series and first WAC road series as they took game one and game three at UTSA. Game one and game two were each one-run games, with one going in each team’s favor. The Redhawks won game one, 4-3, on a seventh-inning single by Brittney Lott to drive in Isabella Geronimo. In game two, the score remained 0-0 until the bottom of the sixth as UTSA went ahead 1-0. Brianna Guerrero tied the score in the top of the 7th with a solo home run, but Megan Low drove in Vivian Tijerina for the game-winning run as the Roadrunners won, 2-1. Seattle U clinched the series win in game three as they won, 9-1, in six innings. Rogin Hardy went 3-for-3 with a team-high 3RBIs as the Redhawks added four runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth.
