After sweeping Utah State last weekend and recording their first WAC series win, Seattle University softball (17-23, 6-6 WAC) moved into a tie for third in the Western Athletic Conference standings. This weekend, they make the trip to San Antonio to face UTSA (20-19, 5-7 WAC) for a single game on Friday, Apr. 19 at 4 p.m. PT (6 p.m. CT) and a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 20 at 2 p.m. PT (4 p.m. CT). Saturday will be UTSA’s annual “Strike Out Cancer” event, with proceeds from a silent auction benefiting the San Antonio Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Richelle Ashburn Named WAC Pitcher of the Week (Apr. 8-14): Ashburn was named Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for her performance in the team’s three-game sweep of Utah State on Apr. 12-13. Ashburn went 2-0 with a 0.58 ERA and seven strikeouts in two complete games, allowing just one earned run in 12 innings of work. Ashburn recorded her fourth shutout of the year in game three and has now thrown 11 complete games this season.
Portland State DH Rescheduled: The home doubleheader vs. Portland State originally scheduled for Wednesday Apr. 10 has been postponed to Wednesday Apr. 24 at 2 p.m. due to weather.
Scouting UTSA: The Roadrunners are currently 20-19 and will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a non-conference DH on Wednesday, Apr. 17 at 2 p.m. PT (4 p.m. CT) before hosting the Redhawks for a 3-game conference series this weekend. After starting the WAC schedule with four straight wins, including a sweep of Texas State and a win vs. San Jose State, UTSA has since lost seven of their last eight games, dropping to sixth place in the conference standings. Siera Sproul leads the Roadrunners at the plate, averaging .356, also adding 14 runs on 32 hits, six doubles, five home runs, and 16 RBIs, and four other hitters average over a .300. In the circle, Haylee Staton leads the team with a 2.73 ERA and a 9-8 record, pitching two shutouts and 11 complete games in 20 starts and 29 appearances. In a close second, Alyssa Vordenbaum boasts a 2.74 ERA and 8-8 record.
Last Time Out: SU and UTSA faced twice last season, before they were conference foes, at the SpringHill Suites Invitational #2 in Boise, Idaho on Mar. 23-24, 2012. Seattle U went 1-1 vs. the Roadrunners, winning the first meeting, 6-1, and dropping the second, 8-3.
Utah State Series (Apr. 12-13): The Redhawks earned their first WAC series win and series sweep vs. the Aggies. In game one, the Redhawks won 3-1 as they took the early 2-0 lead on a Bubba Morrow double and a Becca Cable single. Despite Jolene Koons bringing USU within one in the top of the fourth, Sarah Petosa scored an insurance run as SU took the win. In game two, Christine Thomsen hit an RBI single as Utah State took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning. They kept the lead through nearly the entire contest until the bottom of the seventh when Izzy Geronimo hit a walk-off 2RBI single as Seattle U earned the come-from-behind win, 2-1. Game three was all Seattle U as the Redhawks topped the Aggies, 8-0, in five innings. Isabella Geronimo was a home run shy of the cycle and Brittney Lott hit a walk-off double to drive in the final run.
