Softball to Host PSU, USU in Five-Game Homestand

The Redhawks will host Portland State for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr. 10 and Utah State for a conference series on Friday and Saturday, Apr. 12-13.

After taking the first game of the series from then-WAC leader, San Jose State, Seattle University softball (14-23, 3-6 WAC) returns home for a five-game homestand. The Redhawks are set to host Portland State for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday Apr. 10 at 2 p.m. before welcoming Utah State for a three-game conference series, with a DH on Friday Apr. 12 at 3 p.m. and a single game on Saturday Apr. 13 at 1 p.m. Links to available live stats are on the schedule page at www.GoSeattleU.com. This Weekend’s Promotions: Saturday is the team’s “Strike Out Cancer” breast cancer awareness day, with all proceeds benefitting Susan G. Komen - Puget Sound. There will be a raffle for gift certificates from local businesses, as well as a silent auction for a softball signed by the SU team. All popcorn sales that day will go towards the cause, and handouts with information related to the cause will be available. Scouting Portland State: Brittany Hendrickson currently leads the Vikings at the plate, averaging .340 with 16 runs on 33 hits alongside seven doubles, one triple, six home runs, and 24 RBIs.  In the circle, Anna Bertrand leads the team with a 2.87 ERA and a 12-12 record. They enter this game on a seven-game winning streak after recently sweeping Weber State and Northern Colorado and winning the series vs. Southern Utah. They are currently in first place in the Big Sky Conference standings.

Last Time Out: The two teams last faced for a four-game conference series in Portland, Ore. on Apr. 21-22, 2012, as the Vikings went 3-1 on the weekend. SU and PSU each competed in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference through last season before the softball programs moved to the Western Athletic Conference and Big Sky Conference, respectively.

Scouting Utah State: Utah State recently won their first two WAC contests, going 2-1at UTSA on Apr. 5-6. Christine Thomsen averages .364 at the plate for the Aggies, with eight runs on 24 hits as well as five doubles, one home run, and six RBIs. In the circle, all three pitchers have a 4.00+ ERA.

Last Time Out: This will be the second all-time meeting between the two teams. Before they were conference foes, SU and USU last faced on February 14, 2010, at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah. The Redhawks took the early 3-1 lead with all three runs scored in the first inning, but fell in the contest, 4-3.
