Kacie Sowell (Ventura, Calif.) has been named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week by the conference office, as well as by College Sports Madness, for her performance during the week of Dec. 31-Jan. 6. This is her second Player of the Week honor by the conference office this season. This is her first and the team's second CSM WAC Player of the Week honor this season, as Sylvia Shephard (Alta Loma, Calif.) received the honor for the week of Nov. 19-25.

"Kacie is an outstanding representative of our basketball program and University," said head coach Joan Bonvicini. "She puts in the extra work in and outside of practice to help lead our team."

Sowell recorded back-to-back double-doubles in the team's conference wins over Utah State (Jan. 3) and San Jose State (Jan. 5) over the weekend. She averaged 21.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals, 1.5 assists, and 1.0 blocks per game. In the 71-68 overtime win over Utah State, she scored a career-high 24 points. Her seven double-doubles so far in 2012-13 ties for the WAC lead.

Other nominees for Player of the Week, named by the conference office, include Maiya Michel (Denver), Stacey Barr (Idaho), Kelia Shelton (Louisiana Tech), Stefanie Gilbreath (New Mexico State), and Jenna Johnson (Utah State).

The Redhawks (6-6, 3-0 WAC) are still sitting on top of the WAC as the only undefeated team in conference play this season. They hit the road this weekend to face New Mexico State (Jan. 10) and Denver (Jan. 13) before returning home to host Texas-Arlington (Jan. 17) and Louisiana Tech (Jan. 19).
