This Week for the Redhawks: After opening the season with eight of their first nine games at home (including exhibitions), Seattle University women’s basketball hits the road for their two remaining non-conference competitions. On Dec. 9, they topped Portland State, 72-59, at the Connolly Center behind a career high 23 points by Ashley Ward. This week, the Redhawks (3-4) face Pepperdine (2-5) for the first time in history. Student Incentive Program: For games during which school is in session, students in attendance will have the opportunity to win a prize worth $50 or more following the game (must be present to win). The 500 Club: Kacie Sowell grabbed her 500th career rebound on Dec. 1 vs. UC Irvine with 32 seconds left in regulation. She currently has 513 in her career.
Washington Dental Service Thanksgiving Tournament: The Redhawks won their first Thanksgiving tournament, in the tournament’s third year in this format. Seattle U beat Portland, 63-61, in the semifinals and Sacred Heart, 74-70, in the championship game. Sylvia Shephard was named the Tournament MVP and Kacie Sowell was named to the All-Tournament Team. SU also made it to the championship game in the past two years, but fell to Akron, 85-74, in 2011, and Bowling Green, 71-51, in 2010.
Sylvia Shephard CSM WAC Player of the Week (Nov. 19-25): Shephard was named the College Sports Madness WAC Player of the Week following her perforamance in the team’s WA Dental Service Thanksgiving Tournament semifinal and championship games. Over the weekend, she averaged 20.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, six assists, and three steals per game. From the field, she shot 50.0 percent, as well as 71.4 percent from the free-throw line.
Kacie Sowell WAC Player of the Week (Nov. 5-11): Kacie Sowell received the first Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week award of the 2012-13 season for her performance, a double-double (19 points, 11 rebounds), versus Pacific on Nov. 9.
Ranked Nationally (Through 12/9): As a team, the Redhawks rank third in the nation in NCAA Division I steals per game (15.1). Individually, Kacie Sowell is tied for 13th in double-doubles (5), ranks 22nd in field-goal percentage (58.0 percent), 30th in rebounds per game (10.6), and 50th in points per game (18.3). Sylvia Shephard is tied for sixth in steals per game (4.14) on the season. In single game highs, Sowell is tied for 23rd in field-goal percentage (76.9 percent vs. UC Irvine on Dec. 1) and Ashley Ward ranks 13th, 16th, and 19th in free-throw percentage (88.2 percent on Nov. 17 at Colorado State; 86.7 percent on Dec. 9 vs. Portland State; 84.2 percent on Nov. 9 vs. Pacific).

The only common opponent for the Redhawks and Waves thus far has been Washington, to whom PU fell, 70-51, at Alaska Airlines Arena on Nov. 27. Robie Mayberry leads the team, averaging 12.6 ppg and 6.4 rpg. Shay Cooney-Williams is also averaging in double figures, with 10.7 ppg.
