This Week for the Redhawks: After winning the Washington Dental Service Thanksgiving Tournament Championship, and earning their first two wins of the season over Portland and Sacred Heart, Seattle University women’s basketball (2-3) hosts UC Irvine (1-5) on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 4 p.m. at the Connolly Center. Student Incentive Program: For games during which school is in session, students in attendance will have the opportunity to win a prize worth $50 or more following the game (must be present to win). Students can enter the raffle when they pick up their free game ticket (with Student ID). This week’s prize is a $50 Amazon gift card. Following the game, Coach Bonvicini will address the crowd and pick the winner. At the end of the season, there will be a raffle for a grand prize, and students who have attended more games throughout the season will have a better chance to win.

Junior Ashley Ward hails from Irvine, Calif. and welcomes the Anteaters from her home city for the second time during her Redhawk career.

Washington Dental Service Thanksgiving Tournament: The Redhawks won their first Thanksgiving tournament, in the tournament’s third year in this format.  Seattle U beat Portland, 63-61, in the semifinals and Sacred Heart, 74-70, in the championship game. Sylvia Shephard was named the Tournament MVP and Kacie Sowell was named to the All-Tournament Team. SU also made it to the championship game in the past two years, but fell to Akron, 85-74, in 2011, and Bowling Green, 71-51, in 2010.

Sylvia Shephard CSM WAC Player of the Week (Nov. 19-25):
Shephard was named the College Sports Madness WAC Player of the Week following her perforamance in the team’s WA Dental Service Thanksgiving Tournament semifinal and championship games. Over the weekend, she averaged 20.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, six assists, and three steals per game. From the field, she shot 50.0 percent, as well as 71.4 percent from the free-throw line.

Kacie Sowell WAC Player of the Week (Nov. 5-11):
Kacie Sowell received the first Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week award of the 2012-13 season for her performance, a double-double (19 points, 11 rebounds), versus Pacific on Nov. 9.

Ranked Nationally (Through 11/25): Nationally among NCAA Division I women’s basketball programs, Seattle U is tied for 28th in steals per game (12.8) alongside Tennessee and George Washington. Overall, Kacie Sowell is tied for 16th in double-doubles (3) and Sylvia Shephard is tied for 29th in steals per game (3.6). In single-game highs, Ashley Ward ranks ninth and 13th in single-game free-throw percentage (88.2 percent, Nov. 17 at Colorado State; 84.2, Nov. 9 vs. Pacific) and is tied for 22nd in single-game assists (10, Nov. 24 vs. Sacred Heart).

Leaders of the WAC: As a team, the Redhawks lead the league in assists per game (15.4 apg), offensive rebounds (15.2 rpg), and offensive rebounding pct. (37.4 percent), rank second in rebounds (41.6 rpg) and rebounding margin (+5.2 rpg), third in scoring offense (67.4 ppg), scoring margin (+0.0), field-goal percentage (39.5 percent), rebounds allowed (36.4 rpg), steals (12.8 spg), and defensive rebounding pct. (70.6 percent), and fourth in fewest points allowed (67.4 ppg), free-throw percentage (71.1 percent), and defensive rebounds (26.4 rpg). 

Individually, Kacie Sowell leads the WAC in rebounding (9.8 rpg) and offensive rebounds (20), ranks third in field-goal percentage (57.4 percent) and defensive rebounds (29), and fourth in scoring (18.0 ppg). Sylvia Shephard leads the conference in assists (5.4 apg), ranks second in defensive rebounds (30), third in steals (3.6 spg), is tied for fifth in rebounding (7.4 rpg), ranks seventh in assist-turnover ratio (1.04), ninth in scoring (13.8 ppg), and is tied for ninth in three-point field-goals made (7). Ashley Ward ranks fifth in assists (3.6 apg), sixth in scoring (15.0 ppg) and free-throw percentage (86.0 percent), is tied for eighth in three-point field-goal percentage (33.3 percent), ranks tenth in assist-turnover ratio (0.82), and is tied for tenth in steals (2.0 spg) alongside Daidra Brown. Brenda Adhiambo is tied for third in offensive rebounds (15), ranks fifth in field-goal percentage (52.8 percent), and ranks tenth in rebounding (7.0 rpg).

Milestone Moment: Head coach Joan Bonvicini was honored prior to the Washington contest at KeyArena on Nov. 14, 2012, as it was her 1000th career game coached.

Scouting UC Irvine:
UC Irvine enters this weekend with a 1-5 record, as they picked up their first win, 69-64, vs. Drake at the Aggie Hotel Encanto Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 23. The next day, they fell to host New Mexico State, 50-44, in the championship game. Jennifer  Tsurumoto and Methlyn Onogomuho were named to the All-Tournament team. Along with NMSU, UCI also faced Seattle U’s fellow-WAC member Denver and fell, 62-52 on Nov. 21. Tsurumoto leads the team with 11.8 ppg and Camille Buckley leads with 6.2 rpg. With head coach Doug Oliver at the helm, in his first season, the Anteaters were picked to finish ninth in the Big West Preseason Media Poll. The last time UCI visited Seattle marked their last non-conference road win (Dec. 13, 2010 when UCI won, 69-55).

Last Time Out:
Last time the two teams faced, four Redhawks scored in double figures and Seattle U emerged victorious, topping UCI, 86-58, in Irvine. Ashley Ward led the Redhawks with 20 points and Methlyn Onogomuho led the Anteaters with 14 points. SU outrebounded, 41-32, and UC Irvine committed 19 turnovers that led to 28 Redhawk points.

The SU-UCI Connection: Michelle Augustavo is in her first season as an assistant coach of the Anteaters and previously served as an intern during Joan Bonvicini’s first season at Seattle U (2009-10). After leaving SU, she also spent one season as an assistant coach at Sacramento State (where current SU asst. coach Shaquala Williams also served as an assistant coach) and one season as the Director of Basketball Operations at SU’s fellow-WAC school, Denver. UCI junior Kelly Meggs is from the Seattle area, graduating from Bellevue High School, and her father, Lindsay, is the head baseball coach at the University of Washington.
