VISITING THE FARM: Seattle University once again hits the road this week, traveling to Northern California to face the Stanford Cardinal at Maples Pavilion. The Redhawks look for a better offensive showing from the previous two games while maintaining the defensive intensity brought forth last week against Pacific Lutheran.
WHERE TO FIND THE GAME: 770 AM KTTH The Truth will broadcast the game live, with Dave Grosby and Gary Hill Jr. courtside starting with the pregame show at 6:45 p.m. The game will be shown live by Pac-12 Bay Area, with a repeat showing on Pac-12 Washington Thursday, Nov. 29, at 6:30 a.m. The game will also be streamed on www.pac-12.com, but one will need to verify that they receive the Pac-12 Network through their television provider in order to access the live stream.
THE PACIFIC LUTHERAN GAME: Seattle University overcame its struggles on the offensive end of the floor, using defense and rebounding to hold off Pacific Lutheran, 58-49, last Wednesday night at KeyArena at Seattle Center. Clarence Trent was the only Redhawk to reach double figures in scoring, finishing with 17 points to go along with five rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Deshaun Sunderhaus and Sterling Carter finished with nine points and seven rebounds apiece, with Prince Obasi contributing seven points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. The Redhawks shot 41.2 percent from the field (21-of-51), including 7-of-17 from behind the three-point line, and 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the free throw line. Seattle U won the rebounding battle, 41-30, offsetting 22 turnovers.
HOME COOKING: With the 58-49 victory over Pacific Lutheran last Wednesday, Seattle University extended its home winning streak at KeyArena to 10 games. The Redhawks last lost at the Key Jan. 13, 2012, to Utah Valley, before winning their final eight home games of the 2011-12 season. The next home game for Seattle U is Sunday, Dec. 2, against Boise State at 2 p.m.
SCOUTING STANFORD: The Cardinal come into Wednesday's game with a 4-3 overall record after going 1-2 at the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas during the Thanksgiving holiday. Stanford is 2-1 at Maples Pavilion so far this season, defeating Cal State Fullerton and Alcorn State before losing to Belmont in front of over 4,000 fans each night. The Cardinal are averaging 69.3 points per game and giving up 63.6 points per contest. As a team, Stanford is shooting 39.5 percent from the field, including 27.1 percent from behind the three-point line, and 72.7 percent from the free throw line. Chasson Randle leads the team with 15.4 points, 3.3 assists, and 1.9 steals per game, while Dwight Powell is contributing 13.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Josh Huestis is averaging 8.0 points and a team-high 8.0 rebounds per game. Aaron Bright, a native of Bellevue, Wash., missed the games in the Bahamas due to a sprained ankle, and it is unknown if he will return for Wednesday's contest.
SERIES HISTORY: This will be the fifth meeting all-time between Seattle University and Stanford, with the Cardinal winning all four previous meetings. On Dec. 19, 1984, Stanford earned an 83-46 victory over then-NAIA school Seattle U. Stanford also earned a 105-54 victory over Seattle U Dec. 13, 1985. The series was revived March 1, 2011, at Maples Pavilion. A three-pointer by Sterling Carter brought Seattle U within a point of Stanford at halftime, 28-27, but the Cardinal opened the second half on a 12-1 run, led by nine points from Anthony Brown. Led by six points from Cervante Burrell, Seattle U went on an 8-1 scoring run to cut its deficit to six at 67-61 with just over three minutes left, but the Cardinal went 10-for-12 from the free throw line down the stretch to hold off the Redhawks, 77-66. Last season, in Stanford's first-ever visit to KeyArena to face the Redhawks, the Cardinal outscored Seattle U 38-10 over the final 16 minutes of the first half on their way to a 72-49 victory. Eric Wallace notched a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds, plus he blocked four shots, to lead the Redhawks. Anthony Brown led Stanford with 15 points, with three other Cardinal players scoring 10 points apiece.
