WSOC Hosts Utah State in Battle for WAC Lead, Travels to SJSU

The Redhawks host Utah State on Friday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader with men's soccer (hosting UNLV at 3:30 p.m.) before traveling to face San Jose State on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 2:30 p.m.

Redhawks Host Utah State in Battle for First Place, Travel to San Jose: Riding a five game home winning streak and a four game overall unbeaten streak, Seattle U women’s soccer (7-5-1, 2-0-1) welcomes Utah State, who currently sits on top of WAC standings, on Friday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. The day will feature a soccer doubleheader for SU, as the men’s team hosts UNLV at 3:30 p.m. in conference action, and one ticket admits fans to both contests. The day has been chosen as a Redout event, with a march to the field commencing at 12:45 p.m. from the Library Plaza, and fans in attendance are also encouraged to wear red. On Sunday, Oct. 14, the Redhawks will travel south to face San Jose State at 2:30 p.m.

Verdoia Named WAC Offensive Player of the Week (Oct. 1-7): Stephanie Verdoia was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after recording a hat trick on Oct. 7 versus Idaho. She scored the first goal of the match and added two more after halftime, leading to a 5-1 victory over the Vandals. She led the team with three shots, all on goal, and three goals.

Leaders of the WAC: After eight weeks of competition, as a team, the Redhawks rank third in points (67), goals (23), goals per game (1.77), assists (21), and assists per game (1.62), and fourth in fewest goals allowed (15), lowest GAA (1.11), and shutouts (4). Individually, Stephanie Verdoia is tied for first in game-winning goals (3), ranks second in goals (7), and goals per game (0.54), and third in points (15). Melissa Busque ranks fifth in points per game (0.92). Taylor Ritzman is tied for fifth in goals per game (0.36). Monique Escalera and Busque are tied for fifth in assists (4) and assists per game (0.31). Brianna Smallidge ranks fifth in lowest GAA (1.12) and shutouts (3.1).

Scouting Utah State: The Aggies enter this weekend on top of the conference standings, defeating UTSA, 3-0, and Texas State, 4-0, last weekend. They are currently 2-0-2 in conference play, ending matches in a draw versus both New Mexico State (Sept. 28) and then-No. 18 Denver (Sept. 30) to start conference play. Junior Jennifer Flynn currently leads the team with five goals, and junior Mari Miyashiro leads with four assists. Flynn and Miyashiro also co-lead the team with 10 points apiece. After facing the Redhawks on Friday, they will travel to face Idaho on Sunday, Oct. 14.

Last Time Out: The series between Utah State and Seattle U is tied, 1-1. The two teams last met on Sept. 20, 2009, when Seattle U won, 3-1, at Championship Field. They also met on Aug. 24, 2008, when USU took the 2-1 win on their home field. This will be the first time the two will meet as conference opponents.

Scouting San Jose State:
The Spartans are 3-9-1 overall and 1-3-0 in WAC play going into this weekend, after falling to Texas State, 3-1, and UTSA, 2-1, last weekend. Freshman Mikaella Meibock leads the team with four goals, eight points, and 24 shots in 2012, and junior Megan Molina and senior Kelsey Lord lead with four assists. SJSU travels to Moscow to face the Idaho Vandals on Thursday, Oct. 11 before hosting the Redhawks on Sunday, Oct. 14.

Last Time Out: The two teams last faced on Aug. 31, 2008, in San Jose, when the match ended in a 0-0 tie in 2OT. However, this is the first time the two teams have faced as part of conference play.
