The Seattle University men’s golf team sits just off the lead after Monday’s first round of the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invite, placing four golfers in the top 30 of the tournament held at Monarch Dunes Golf Course in Monarch, Calif.
Will Holdridge (Lynden, Wash.) headlines the Seattle U roster after a first-round 68, two strokes under par and good enough to be tied for sixth place. Holdridge was bolstered by a front nine score of 32, three strokes under par.
Colter Morton (Pocatello, Idaho) shot nine-hole scores of 36 and 35 to total one-over-par 70 Monday. He is tied currently tied for 11th, two spots above teammate Preston Matchett (Billings, Mont.), who turned in one-over-par 36’s on both nines to sit at two-over-par 72 for the tournament.
Rob Seibly (Spokane, Wash.), the top-finishing Redhawk in the squad’s first two tournaments, is tied for 29th after a first round of four-over-par 74, and David Torres (Armenia, Colombia) is tied for 32nd with a score of five-over-par 75.
As a team, the Redhawks have a cumulative score of 285, just one stroke behind leader Cal State Northridge. Biola’s Joshua Mathis and UCLA’s Preston Valder and Jake Knapp are in a three-way tie for the lead with five-under-par 65’s on the round.
Two rounds were scheduled for Monday, but play was suspended with three or four holes left to play in the second round due to darkness late in the day. The second round will resume at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, October 8, and the third and final round will follow with an estimated shotgun time of 10:30 a.m.
