Women's Soccer Ties UTSA, 1-1, in Conference Opener

In their first Western Athletic Conference match, Seattle University women's soccer (5-5-1) faced the University of Texas-San Antonio (1-7-1) and the match ended in a 1-1 tie after two overtime periods.

"Our team definitely played very hard, which I was pleased about," said head coach Julie Woodward. "We missed some early opportunities, which kept them in the game and made it tough to put them away."

Seattle U outshot UTSA, 6-5, in the first half, but neither team was able to get the ball in the net, and the two teams headed into halftime scoreless.

In the 56th minute, UTSA took the lead, as Liv Nyhegn scored her first goal of the season on an assist by Anka Grotle.

The Redhawks answered back in the 80th minute, as Stephanie Verdoia (Salt Lake City, Utah) scored on an assist by Monique Escalera (Riverside, Calif.) to tie the game, 1-1.

Neither team was able to add to their total during regulation and the match went into overtime. Both teams scoreless in the first overtime, the game went into double overtime and the score remained 1-1 after 110 minutes of play.

Brianna Smallidge (Port Orchard, Wash.) played all 110 minutes in goal, recording three saves. For UTSA, Katarina Pus also played a complete game, recording five saves.

Kelly Beck (Tacoma, Wash.) got her second career start in the contest, and Heather Thomas (Woodinville, Wash.) and Taylor Ritzman (Holladay, Utah) made their first starts of the season for the Redhawks. Melissa Busque (St. Bruno, Quebec, Canada) led Seattle U with three shots and the Redhawks were slightly outshot, 14-13, overall.
