The Seattle University women's basketball program held their Nike Girls Basketball Camp over the weekend, hosting 70 young players, ages eight to 17. Seattle U head coach Joan Bonvicini and her coaching staff ran the camp, along with help from current and former players including Kacie Sowell, Sylvia Shephard, Ashley Ward, Maggie McCarthy, and former team manager Monica Nevi.

The campers were able to further develop their skills and techniques, practice fundamentals, and improve their game in a fun atmosphere. They focused on all the keys that have brought the Redhawks success - fundamentals, shooting, offensive moves, defense, rebounding, and team play.

Campers also had the opportunity to hear from Kayla Burt, a former UW women's basketball player, who suffered cardiac arrest midway through her collegiate career. She was miraculously revived by teammates and EMT workers and now works for the Hope Heart Institute, while also traveling around to tell her inspirational story.

"We had a great week of camp and I was very impressed with the enthusiasm and talent of all our campers," said Bonvicini. "A very special thank you to my entire basketball staff and all the players who helped out. Our Seattle U basketball camp continues to grow each year and we are excited about our partnership with the community."

The Redhawks open their season with exhibition matches versus Simon Fraser (Thursday Nov. 1) and Western Washington (Saturday Nov. 3) and begin the regular season on Friday Nov. 9 when they host Pacific.
