Seattle University head men's basketball coach Cameron Dollar has announced that Amadou "Pape" Koundoul will join the staff of the Redhawk program as an assistant coach.
"It is a great opportunity to work for Cameron Dollar because he has a great vision for where he wants to take the Seattle University program," Koundoul said.
Koundoul was an assistant coach under Ron Everhart at Duquesne University during the 2011-12 season, working with the low post players, putting together the team's offensive strategy, and helping with the program's recruiting efforts. The Dukes were 16-15 last year, including victories over Akron, Penn State, George Mason, and Dayton.
Koundoul also served as an assistant coach at UC Irvine (2010-11) and Centenary College of Louisiana (2009-10). He had been a head coach at Summit College Prep (2007-08) and an assistant coach at Stoneridge Prep (2006-07), both located in Simi Valley, Calif. In 2008-09, Koundoul was a French and physical education instructor as well as a basketball coach at Saint Stanislaus College in Bay St. Louis, Miss.
As a player, Koundoul began at Vincennes University in Indiana, helping the squad to a 25-2 record in 2000-01, before moving on to Highland Community College, where he was part of a conference championship team in 2001-02. He joined Rollie Massimino's Cleveland State squad for the 2004-05 campaign, earning his bachelor's degree in communications from Cleveland State in May 2005 before beginning his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater in 2005-06.
This summer, Koundoul has returned to his native Senegal to help the national basketball team. He was the captain of Team Africa during the 2002 Global Games held in Dallas, Texas.
The Seattle University men's basketball team joins the Western Athletic Conference beginning in 2012-13 and will be eligible for the conference title along with a berth into the NCAA Tournament.
