Kevlyn Richards (Gig Harbor, Wash.) realized a goal she had set for herself, as she competed in the preliminaries of the women's 100 meter breaststroke at the 2012 United States Olympic Swimming Trials Tuesday morning at the CenturyLink Center Omaha.
Richards swam in the second of 16 heats in the 100 meter breaststroke, finishing seventh in the heat with a time of 1:14.00. Her time was faster than that of 13 other swimmers who competed throughout the event, but it was not fast enough to move her into Tuesday evening's semifinals.
Richards, a sport and exercise science major, qualified for the Olympic Trials by posting a mark of 1:12.17 June 9 at the Last Chance for Glory Invitational held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash. It was her fourth attempt at reaching the trials since the end of the collegiate swim season in March.
Entering her senior year with the Redhawk swim team, Richards will be one of the captains for the 2012-13 squad. The Seattle U women's swim program will be one of 17 sports officially moving into the Western Athletic Conference in just a few days.
