After earning a top 10 finish at the America Sky Golf Championship May 1st, Rob Seibly (Spokane, Wash.) has been named GoSeattleU.com's Featured Student Athlete of the Week.
At the conference championship tournament held at Lake of Isles Golf Course in Ledyard, Conn. April 29-May 1, Seibly ended in a tie for 10th place with 230 strokes (+14). The top 10 finish nabbed Seibly a spot on the all-tournament second team, his first conference honor of the year, and also gave him the top spot on Seattle U's roster. Additionally, Seibly's performance at the America Sky Golf Championship helped Seattle U tie for fifth place in the conference, one spot higher than last year's showing at the conference tournament.
Throughout the season, Seibly tallied three top 10 finishes and one additional top 25 placement. He lowered his stroke-average to just over 74 shots per round, the lowest on the team, and he finished as the highest-ranked Redhawk in three tournaments. Also, he helped lead the Redhawks to a tournament victory in the Cal Poly Lamkin Grip Cup and four other top five finishes as a team.
Seibly doesn't just earn birdies on the golf course, he birdies his tests as well. The junior accounting major has tallied a 3.604 grade point average during his three years at Seattle U, including a 3.9 GPA last winter. This is Seibly's second time being named Student Athlete of the Week but first individual honor as he earned the nomination last year as one of the five members of the men's golf team to win the award Sept. 28, 2010.
Seibly and the rest of the men's golf team have finished their 2011-12 season, but will tee it up in 2012-13 as members of the Western Athletic Conference. They, along with 16 other SU sports, will join the WAC July 1st, 2012, and they will be eligible for NCAA championship competition as well.
The Seattle University athletics department will name a Featured Student-Athlete each Tuesday based on performances both in competition and in the classroom.
